The area has been a nature reserve since December 4, 1986. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.
It is located within the " Steinhuder Meer " nature park, northwest of the Steinhuder Meer , roughly between Rehburg in the south, Husum in the north and Schneeren in the east, and protects an upland moor that has been greatly altered by peat peat digging. The high moor on the edge of the valley of the strand Bach is in its formation over muds and fen grew up. The thickness of the moor layer is up to five meters, that of the raised bog peat up to two meters.
The nature reserve is characterized by quarry and moor forest . Open bogs are by Moor Heide with bells -, broom - and rosemary and crows and - Cranberry marked. The former peat cuttings, which slowly regenerate, are shaped like rewetted areas by cotton grass and peat moss - vibrating lawns and whistle grass .
Individual areas in the nature reserve are used extensively for agriculture as pastures or hay meadows . In the south, the moor area borders on a forested compression moraine in this area . The slope of the moraine is included in the nature reserve. The forest is used for forestry here.
The moor area drains to the Strangbach, which flows into the Weser tributary Meerbach (Steinhuder Meerbach) .
