The spring forest near Bennemühlen is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Wedemark in the Hanover region .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 237 is approximately 33  hectares in size. It comprises the approximately 15.5 hectare FFH area of ​​the same name . The area has been under nature protection since December 14, 2018. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.

The nature reserve is located north of Hanover between the districts of Bennemühlen and Hellendorf in the municipality of Wedemark. It comprises most of the chapel wood, an old and natural forest area, as well as adjacent grassland areas . In the chapel wood, alder-ash spring forest, u. a. with common viburnum and red currant and a species-rich herb layer , grove-beech forest with only a sparsely pronounced herb layer as well as mixed oak and beech forest u. a. with a seven-pointed star , wiry eyelid and forest honeysuckle in the herb layer. The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood . The nature reserve is traversed by the Bennemühlen Mühlenbach, which is close to nature here and is fed by a natural spring area of around two hectares . The grassland areas surrounding the chapel wood complement the living space and act as a buffer zone for the source area.

The oak and beech forests are the habitat of the black woodpecker and the bat species great noctule bat , little noctule bat and rough-skin bat .

In the northwest of the area there is a small, private forest cemetery with a chapel, after which the forest area is named.

The nature reserve borders in the north and south on the localities of Bennemühlen and Hellendorf. Otherwise it is largely surrounded by agricultural land .
