The Helstorfer Altwasser is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 183 is 30 hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area "Aller (with Barnbruch), lower Leine, lower Oker".
The nature reserve is located west of Helstorf in the flooded area of the Leine and protects a silting loop of the Leine river with an adjacent impact slope . Most of the silting river loop is unused and is characterized by floodplain and broken forest . Remnants of the river loop are preserved as ponds. The lowland area along the Leine is characterized by permanent grassland on moist sites.
In numerous places in the nature reserve there are swollen areas with swampy vegetation.
In the west, the mouth of the Jürsenbach is included in the nature reserve. This is characterized by vegetation and reed areas typical of alluvial forests.
The area has been under nature protection since April 3, 1997. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.
