The Dead Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony cities of Wunstorf and Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region .

location

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 154 is 3179 hectares in size. Of this, 2282 ha are in the area of the city of Neustadt am Rübenberge and 897 ha in the area of the city of Wunstorf. Parts of the nature reserve are part of the FFH area “Steinhuder Meer (with border areas)” and the EU bird protection area “Steinhuder Meer”. In the nature reserve prescribed in May 2016, the former nature reserves Ostufer Steinhuder Meer , Wulveskuhlen and Wunstorfer Moor were merged.

The nature reserve consists of the dead moor of the same name including its edge areas, the adjacent Geestrand , the south adjoining moorland of the Großenheidorn meadows and part of the water surface on the east bank of the Steinhuder Sea .

It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and valuable landscapes in the Hanover region. The significant increase in the protected area compared to the previous individual areas is controversial among some previous users.

description

The approximately 2300 hectare Dead Moor is the largest raised moor in the Hanover region. It has been drained and partially used in the past. The hand peat digs that used to be carried out on the farm have not been used for decades.

Industrial peat mining in parts of the moor will expire in the medium term. After the permissible soil degradation has ended, the areas will be prepared with the aim of regenerating raised bogs. Depending on the success of rewetting , those that are already idle develop into bog degeneration stages or in the direction of near-natural raised bog areas. In order to combat the late bird cherry that has been introduced, areas are specifically grazed.

The “Totes Moor” nature reserve is a core area of a biotope network of national importance. The special quality and uniqueness arise from the close spatial interlinking of different biotopes and the large area of the area, which enables the occurrence of a very species-rich and demanding fauna .

The Dead Moor is a habitat for many specialized communities and species of the raised bogs. The low-lying edge areas of the high moor and its transition to the low moor are characterized by large-scale and predominantly near-natural moist and wet forests. In the north and west the high moor merges into the Sandgeest. Isolated moraine peaks protrude from the bog. These predominantly dry locations with their special communities show a high diversity of species and habitats. Sand heaths and dry sand grasslands are sometimes extremely well developed. As a unique feature, these habitats on the northern edge of the Dead Moor in the transition to the Schneerener Geest are home to all the reptile species that occur in Lower Saxony in large populations.

The Bannsee on the northwestern edge of the Dead Moor is a moor edge body of water with significant amphibian populations and extensive fens habitat.

In the north and east of the nature reserve, semi-natural forests on medium and dry locations, especially oak mixed forests on the eastern edge of the Dead Moor and pine forests on poor sandy soils on the northern edge of the area.

To the south of the Dead Moor, the Großenheidorn meadows are largely open grassland lowlands . They are habitat for a multitude of endangered bird and grasshopper species . Littered ponds also offer amphibians spawning opportunities.

The water surface contained in the nature reserve on the east bank of the Steinhuder Meer shows a natural transition of the water surface into extensive fens and reed areas, which on the land side merge into swamp bushes and swamp forests . Water areas and, depending on the water level, free-falling sandbanks are important resting and feeding areas for breeding and resting birds. Numerous species of birds breed in the undisturbed bank areas.

The nature reserve drains partly to the Steinhuder Meer and partly to the Leine .

The area has been under nature protection since May 27, 2016. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.
