Wunstorfer Moor

The Wunstorfer Moor is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony cities of Wunstorf and Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 154 was 650 hectares in size. It was completely part of the FFH area “Steinhuder Meer (with peripheral areas)” and the EU bird sanctuary “Steinhuder Meer”. In the west it bordered the former nature reserve " Ostufer Steinhuder Meer ". The area has been under nature protection since March 21, 1991. On May 27, 2016, the ordinance was repealed as a nature reserve. The areas became part of the new NSG HA 154 Totes Moor . The responsible lower nature conservation authority was the Hanover region.
The former nature reserve is located between Neustadt am Rübenberge and Steinhude within the " Steinhuder Meer " nature park and in the Hanoverian Moorgeest , an Ice Age geest and ground moraine landscape. It placed a section of the Dead Moor under protection and was located in the southeast of this extensive high moor complex.
The moor area was drained and partially used in the past. The hand peat digs used in the past are now unused. In them have peat moss - quaking developed. The borders are with birch - Moorwald and willow thickets and Hochstaudenfluren passed. Areas have been cultivated in the south and east . Today they are mainly used as moist grassland for mowing or as pasture .
Parts of the bog were still industrially peated at the time it was placed under protection. These were after the end of its useful rewetted , has emerged whereby a larger body of water. In addition, decussing measures were carried out.
The moorland, which is the habitat of animal and plant species in need of protection, should be protected by placing it under protection and renatured using suitable measures . The moor drains partly to the Steinhuder Meer and partly to the Leine .
