The east bank of the Steinhuder Meer is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony cities of Wunstorf and Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region .

General

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 030 was 360  hectares in size. It was completely part of the FFH area “Steinhuder Meer (with peripheral areas)” and the EU bird sanctuary “Steinhuder Meer”. In the east it bordered on the former nature reserve " Wunstorfer Moor ". The former nature reserve " Wulveskuhlen " followed a little to the south . The area has been under nature protection since December 24, 1970. In May 1982 it was extended to the northeast by a former peat excavation area. On May 27, 2016, the ordinance was repealed as a nature reserve. The areas became part of the new NSG HA 154 Totes Moor . The responsible lower nature conservation authority was the Hanover region.

description

The former nature reserve is located southwest of Neustadt am Rübenberge on the east bank of the Steinhuder Meer within the “ Steinhuder Meer ” nature park and in the Hanoverian Moorgeest , an ice age geest and ground moraines landscape. It places a section of the Dead Moor , the shore area of the Steinhuder Meer and part of the water surface under protection.

The bay area of the Steinhuder Meer, which is rich in bays and separates the nutrient-rich lake and the nutrient-poor upland moor , is predominantly characterized by reed and reed areas . While cattails and reeds grow in the area of the lake through which water flows in front of the bank area, the reed belt is located on the silted up bank area. In the north and south of the former nature reserve, alder forests interspersed with buckthorn adjoin the reed belt.

The drained high moor area east of the lake is mostly covered with birch trees . In between there are smaller areas with vegetation typical of raised bogs.

By the Moor extends a trail on a previous Moor embankment , which is part of the circular route around the Steinhude. At a part of the path within the former nature reserve a marsh was Erlebnisweg with information panels, an observation platform and a bridge applied via a growing again Moor.

On the shores of the Steinhuder Meer in the north, on the edge of the former nature reserve, there is the platform “Neue Moorhütte”, from which the Steinhuder Meer and the extensive reed belt can be seen. An observation tower is located in the south of the former nature reserve between the circular hiking trail and the lake. The tower can be reached from the circular hiking trail via a boardwalk that runs along a former peat canal.

The area drains partly to the Steinhuder Meer, but partly also via various ditches to the Leine .
