The Hannoversche Moorgeest is an approximately 800 km², slightly undulating landscape between Hanover and Nienburg in Lower Saxony . It belongs to the north-west German high moor district, which extends over the geest areas from the Netherlands to the eastern border of Lower Saxony.

description

The geest landscape of the Hannoversche Moorgeest consists of a ground moraine plate with a height of 50 to 85 m above sea level, which is dominated by moors . The natural borders are the Aller - glacial valley in the north and the Burgdorf-Peiner Geest in the east .

The Geest area with its village settlements has a distinctly rural character. The exception is the city of Neustadt am Rübenberge . The Steinhuder Meer, about 30 km² in size, is located in a shallow basin in the area. Originally, the inland water was three times as large, which can be seen in its moored peripheral areas in the west and south-west.

Large parts of the landscape used to consist of raised bogs . In the course of time they have been peeled off and cultivated for agricultural purposes. Significantly smaller moors have been preserved, such as the Altwarmbüchener Moor , the Bissendorfer Moor , the Helstorfer Moor , the Black Moor near Resse , the Dead Moor and the Otternhagener Moor . By peat extraction ( peat ) artificial farmland, the one created boggy have character. This makes agricultural use possible only to a limited extent. The forests mostly consist of pine forests used for forestry . Deciduous forest occurs occasionally on the terminal moraines . The lowlands are used extensively for agriculture as grassland. While most of the moors are now under nature protection, peat will be mined industrially on a large scale in the Dead Moor near Neustadt until around 2019 .
