The Helstorfer Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Neustadt am Rübenberge and the municipality of Wedemark in the Hanover region .
description
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 056 is 417 hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area "Helstorfer, Otternhagener and Schwarzes Moor". The nature reserve is located immediately north of the " Otternhagener Moor " nature reserve . To the west it borders on the landscape protection area "Moorgeest". The area has been a nature reserve since May 9, 1996. It replaces the nature reserve of the same name designated in March 1980. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.
The nature reserve is located northeast of Neustadt am Rübenberge and west of Mellendorf in the Hanoverian Moorgeest , an ice age geest and ground moraine landscape. It places a high moorland under protection that was created around 4000 years ago.
The Moor was in the past drained and rural Handtorfstiche teilabgetorft. It is characterized by bog and quarry forest , but also open bog areas with bog heather . In the former Handtorfstichen be extended have peat moss - quaking formed companies, which slowly silting and Bult-Schlenken complexes formed. In the peripheral areas, especially in the northeast and southeast, extensively used grassland is also included in the nature reserve. The north-west of the protected area is part of the training area of the Wilhelmstein barracks in Luttmersen .
The area drains through various ditches to the south via the Negenborner Moorgraben in the east and the ditch in front of the Moore in the west to the Neuen Auter and to the north via the Ochsenbeeke to the Jürsenbach.
Development of the area
As part of the LIFE + project “Hannoversche Moorgeest”, several moors on an area of 2,240 hectares, including the Helstorfer Moor, are to be ecologically upgraded by 2023. To optimize rainwater retention, existing drainage systems are to be dismantled and new dams and dams are to be built. In addition, areas have already been decussed , small bodies of water released and grassland areas extensified. Information boards inform those interested on site.
