The Sundern is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Hemmingen in the Hanover region .

description

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 004 is 50.4  hectares in size. It is located south of Hanover between Hemmingen and Arnum and protects a silted up river loop in the glacial valley of the Leine . The area of the silted up river bend is predominantly characterized by forest on a damp site. In addition, alluvial forest relics can be found. Drier locations are partly composed of oak-hornbeam and beech-oak mixed forests with a high proportion of old wood.

The areas between the forested zones are used for arable farming.

natural reserve

The area has been a nature reserve since April 5, 1931. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.

The aim of nature conservation measures is the conversion of arable land into extensively managed grassland and the preservation and development of semi-natural alluvial forest with a high proportion of old wood instead of non- native hybrid poplar and coniferous wood . In swamp forests like the Sundern there is a risk of gradual loss of natural area due to lowering of the groundwater .

mausoleum

The ruins of the mausoleum for Carl von Alten

After the death of the Hanover - British general and statesman Carl von Alten , the Count Carl von Alten mausoleum near Wilkenburg was built for him in 1842 , today in the Sundern nature reserve. It was designed by the royal Hanoverian court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves and completed by the architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase . Today, the mausoleum is considered to be the first neo-Gothic brick building in northern Germany . The building fell into ruin over time. In 1987 an association to save the mausoleum was founded.
