description
The nature reserve is located south of Hanover between the Laatzener district of Rethen (Leine) , Sarstedt and the Pattenser district of Koldingen . It puts the Leineaue between Ruthe in the south and Koldingen in the north under protection. The Leine flows through the nature reserve in the west. The meandering river is close to nature with impact and sliding slopes . The lowland regions in the West is predominantly by agricultural land ( arable and grassland ), and the passed canvas with woods edge terraces embossed. To the east of the Leine there are extensive gravel extraction waters. Gravel mining was stopped here at the end of 2002. The areas between the lakes are often fallow and ruderal areas with gravel , sand and scree areas.
In the north-east of the nature reserve between the Heiseder drainage ditch and the embankments of the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg and the Hanover Southern Railway lie the former stacking basins of the sugar factory in Rethen, which was closed in 1993 . Today the ponds are fed with water from a rainwater retention basin .
The nature reserve is a habitat for numerous bird species - over 240 have been recorded as guest or breeding birds , including over 60 water and wading bird species . 75 species of birds occur regularly as breeding birds. In addition to birds, the Leineaue and lakes also provide a habitat for many insects , amphibians , bats and plants.
In addition to nature conservation, the protected area is also used for local recreation . A visitor control concept coordinates both functions of the area and keeps disruptions to a minimum. There are information boards in several places. Two observation towers offer opportunities to observe nature over part of the Koldinger Lakes (also: Koldinger Teiche) and adjacent areas. One of the towers is in the north of the nature reserve on the west bank of the Großer Koldinger See, the other tower, which was built in summer 2011, is in the south of the Großer Koldinger See.
