The Steinberg near Wesseln is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Bad Salzdetfurth in the Hildesheim district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 074 is 16 hectares in size. It is congruent with the FFH area of the same name .
The nature reserve, north of Bad Salzdetfurth and west of the Wesseln district, protects the moderately steep to steep southern slope of the Steinberg, a ridge in the east of the Tosmarberg , made of shell limestone . The easily warm, weathered limestone soil is covered with semi-arid grass and bushes. The semi-arid lawns are grazed. In addition, small patches of forest and, especially in the eastern area, grassland areas are included in the nature reserve .
In the nature reserve a large number of rare plant , snail and insect species adapted to dry and warm locations can be found.
The area has been a nature reserve since August 23, 2007. It replaces the former nature reserve of the same name, which was designated July 12, 1984 and which has been expanded to the southeast. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Hildesheim district.
