The Osterberg is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon community of Giesen in the Hildesheim district .

The nature reserve with the registration NSG HA 246 is 51.65  hectares . It is largely part of the FFH area "Haseder Busch, Giesener Berge, Gallberg, Finkenberg". To the east it borders on the nature reserve " Lange Dreisch and Osterberg " north of the conservation area "Giesen Hills and ponds." The area has been under nature protection since December 20, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Hildesheim district.

The nature reserve is located northwest of Hildesheim . It places parts of the Giesener Berge under protection as parts of a foothill of the Hildesheimer Bergland that protrudes far into the Calenberger Börde and primarily comprises slopes of the Osterberg that are exposed to the west . Parts of the area are within the end of 2007 by the Bundeswehr discontinued site training area Hildesheim. In the north of the area still existing, former ammunition bunkers are used for nature conservation purposes. In the north-west of the nature reserve there is an abandoned limestone quarry as a habitat for drought-loving species.

On the Osterberg, oak and hornbeam forests grow in lime-rich locations. The dominant tree species are English oak and hornbeam . There are also ash , field maple and norway maple , bird cherry , red beech and summer linden . In the shrub layer falter hazel , hawthorn and honeysuckle in the herb layer are forest orchard grass , forest Bingelkraut , Carex sylvatica , Türkenbundlilie , wonder violet and wood violets to find. The forest stands have a high proportion of old and dead wood . Black pine stocks stagnant in the nature reserve are to be converted into deciduous forest communities typical of the location.

Dry grassland and grassland are embedded in the forests . Settle on the dry grass and a. Scabiosa knapweed , crested finial , broad-leaved thyme , German gentian and fringed gentian , mosquito hendelwort , bee and fly herbaceous , horseshoe clover , upright brine and spring sedge . Grassland areas used as hay meadows accommodate u. a. Common trembling grass , meadow marguerite , bulbous buttercup , meadow knapweed and hawkweed . Many species come up against the limits of their natural range in the nature reserve, as the nature reserve is one of the northernmost occurrences of limestone semi-arid grassland and forests in dry and warm locations. The nature reserve is grazed with sheep.

The nature reserve is the habitat of the Great Mouse-eared Mouse .
