The Giesener Berge near Giesen , northwest of Hildesheim , in the Lower Saxony district of Hildesheim are one to 242.5  m above sea level. NHN high ridge of the Innerstebergland in the Lower Saxon uplands .

Usually, (The) Giesener Berge only refers to the northern part of the landscape, which is directly south of the eponymous village of Giesen. The natural area of ​​the same name, however, is much larger.

The Giesen Mountains are located in the far north of the Innerstebergland . They connect to the north of the Hildesheim Forest, which is up to 358.9  m high , and strive from the Hildesheim districts of Hildesheimer Wald and Marienrode to the west past the districts of Neuhof , Moritzberg and Himmelsthür and to the east past Hildesheim- Sorsum and Giesen- Emmerke towards the north to the village of Giesen , the core of the municipality of Giesen . To the east, the ridge, which is around 10.5 km long, drops to the Innerste, which flows past it in a south-north direction, and towards the northwest gradually to the Leine, which runs about 7 km away in the same direction. In the area of Osterberg's was formerly the training area Hildesheim .

The Giesener Berge form the natural space Giesener Berge (379.00) in the natural spatial main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (No. 37), in the main unit Innerstebergland (379) and in the subunit Hildesheimer Bergland (379.0 ), with the landscape facing south in the natural area Hildesheimer Wald (379.01) and to the southeast into the natural area Marienburger Hügelland (379.03). In the north and east of the Braunschweig-Hildesheimer Loessbörde (520) the subunit Hildesheimer Loessbörde (520.3) joins, and to the west in the Hildesheim forest foreland (521.2) is the natural area Rössinger Loesshügel (521.20).

Protected areas

On the northern part of the Giesener Berge lies the nature reserve (NSG) Lange Dreisch and Osterberg ( CDDA no. 555546; designated 2011; 2.45  km² in size), to which the NSG Giesener Teiche (CDDA no. 163243; 1984; 11  ha ) and to the east join the NSG Mastberg and Innersteaue (CDDA no. 163919; 1939; 37 ha). The Finkenberg / Lerchenberg NSG (CDDA no. 329374; 2004; 2.57 km²) is located in the southern part and the Gallberg NSG (CDDA no. 81710; 1976; 42 ha) to the north-northeast . In the north of the landscape lies the landscape protection area (LSG) Giesener Berge und Teiche (CDDA no. 321077; 1967; 1.3 km²) and in the south there are spatially separated areas of the LSG Gallberg, Finkenberg and Lerchenberg (CDDA no. 320950 ; 1968; 1.01 km²) and the LSG Rottsberghang (CDDA no. 323996; 1992; 1.29 km²). In addition, the fauna-flora-habitat area Haseder Busch, Giesener Berge, Gallberg, Finkenberg (FFH no. 3825-301; 7.42 km²) is located on the ridge, and parts of the landscape are in the south Bird sanctuary Hildesheimer Wald (VSG no. 3825-401; 12.47 km²).

Traffic and walking

A little east past the northern part of the Giesener Berge leads - roughly parallel to and beyond it - a section of federal highway 6 . These crosses in Hildesheim the national road 1 , which leads from there to the west ridge and by its central part to Emmerke. There, state road  460 branches off to the south, which leads west past the southern part of the landscape to the Hildesheim district of Hildesheimer Wald . A few county roads and other small roads branch off from these roads , which also open up the ridge. The ridge can be hiked on many field and forest trails.
