geography

The village of Giesen is located between Hildesheim and Sarstedt directly on the Innerste and at the foot of the Giesen Forest (northeast). Neighborhoods are Hasede , Emmerke , Ahrbergen and Groß Förste .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1146. Old names of the place are 1146 Gesim, 1147 Iesen, 1100–1200 Iesen, 1151 Iesen, 1181–1190 Ihesen, 1181 Iesen and 1193 Gesem. The initial fluctuation in the place name is noticeable: “G-” alternates with “J-”, but this is not so rare in Low German. It often refers to a designation for “spray water”: “wes - / * ges-” for “foaming, fermenting” in the sense of “place at the foaming water”.

The distinction between large and small Giesen began as early as the 14th century. Between Giesen and Emmerke was the place Beelte, which was wiped out in the Thirty Years War . It is assumed that many of the Giesen families have their origins in the village of Groß Beelte.

On March 1, 1974, the two communities Groß Giesen and Klein Giesen were merged together with four other communities to form the new community Giesen. Large and small Giesen still exist as landmarks to this day .

religion

Giesen has two Catholic churches, St. Vitus from 1670 in Groß Giesen and St. Martin in Klein Giesen. The parish of St. Vitus, based in Groß Giesen, has included the churches Maria Mutter der Kirche and St. Peter and Paul (both Ahrbergen), St. Pankratius (Groß Förste), St. Vitus (Groß Giesen), St. Andreas (Hasede), St. Johannes (Klein Förste) and St. Martin (Klein Giesen). Before that, the two Giesen churches St. Vitus and St. Martin formed a pastoral care unit with the two churches in Ahrbergen .

The evangelical parish of Giesen is the Pauluskirche in Hasede.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the place Groß Giesen goes back to the seal of Ethelgerus de Gesim, who belonged to a local knight family. The horizontal bar is supposed to represent an oak beam . Together with the iron nails, it symbolizes strength and steadfastness. The Klein Giesen coat of arms is based on the shield of the von Beelte family.

Culture and sights

  • Giesen local history museum
  • Barrows from the Bronze Age in the Giesen forest
  • The west tower of the Catholic parish church St. Vitus was built in 1672–75, the current nave in 1929. Inside the church, the baroque altars from the end of the 17th century and six ceiling paintings from around 1675 are noteworthy. The high altar dates from the 18th century, while the pulpit was made around 1520 and originally stood in the Nikolaikapelle in Hildesheim.
  • The Giesener Teiche (belong to the area of the city of Hildesheim ). You can observe rare plants and birds here . Here was the description of the ponds of Hermann Lons . After the armed forces withdrew from Hildesheim at the end of 2007, the area south of the Giesener Teiche, the so-called Osterberg as a nature reserve " Lange Dreisch and Osterberg ", was made accessible to the population by a so-called clover leaf, which reflects the shape of the paths. In terms of landscape, this landscape reflects a small Rhön north of Hildesheim .
  • The "unofficial landmark" of Giesen is the spoil dump of the former potash plant. It announces the weather from afar by changing color from white to dark gray and is therefore a special feature.

Sports

  • Multi-purpose hall (with tennis court and beach volleyball court), Emmerker Straße
  • Sports field, forest stadium
  • B sports field, Latherwischweg

Economy and Infrastructure

The village of Giesen is predominantly characterized by residential developments.

Companies

Until the 1990s, the largest company in the town was Kali und Salz AG ( Siegfried mine ). The cost-effectiveness of the recommissioning of the Siegfried mine reserve mine is currently being examined as part of a study. It is still unclear when a decision will be made on this. Commissioning would entail investments of around 500 million euros and would have a lasting effect on the development of the village of Giesen.
