Location of the community of Giesen in the Hildesheim district | ||
Giesen is a municipality in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony , located on the Innerste on the northern edge of the Weser-Leine mountainous region. The main village of the municipality is Giesen , also giving its name to the Giesen mountains .
geography
Geographical location
Giesen lies directly west of the Innerste and immediately north of the Giesen mountains at an altitude of 70-100 meters. The municipality borders in a clockwise direction, starting in the northeast with Harsum , Hildesheim , Nordstemmen and Sarstedt . The situation at the Innerste turned out to be problematic in October 2007, as in the villages of Giesen (in the former Klein Giesen) and Ahrbergen numerous cellars, the entire Ahrberg Forest and an entire industrial area were flooded during the flood of the century .
Community structure
Giesen has five villages:
- Ahrbergen : 2200 inhabitants (−23)
- Emmerke : 1752 inhabitants (+39)
- Giesen : 3370 inhabitants (−34) (Groß Giesen, Klein Giesen; Siegfried , former workers' settlement at the potash plant)
- Groß Förste : 789 inhabitants (−2)
- Hasede : 1604 inhabitants (+7)
(As of December 31, 2019, the changes compared to the previous year in brackets)
history
The community of Giesen was created on March 1, 1974 by merging the communities of Ahrbergen, Emmerke, Groß Förste, Groß Giesen, Hasede and Klein Giesen. The oldest of these places is Emmerke. The 1150th anniversary was celebrated there in 2004.
History of religion
The high proportion of Catholics, which is atypical for Eastern Lower Saxony, is due to its historical affiliation with the Little Hildesheim Monastery . The villages of today's municipality of Giesen, like Harsum, belonged to the monastery villages .
Since November 1st, 2014 the Catholic churches St. Maria, Mutter der Kirche and St. Peter and Paul (both Ahrbergen), St. Pankratius (Groß Förste), St. Vitus (Groß Giesen), St. Andreas (Hasede) belong , St. Johannes (in Klein Förste belonging to Harsum ) and St. Martin (Klein Giesen) to the parish of St. Vitus with its seat in Groß Giesen. The St. Martinus Church in Emmerke, however, belongs to the Hildesheim parish of St. Martinus .

- the 45-degree battlements from the Emmerke coat of arms
- The horizontal bar in red and silver from the coat of arms of Ahrbergen - however, the colors red and silver were swapped.
- The green background of the upper part comes from both the Hasede coat of arms and the coat of arms of Groß Förste.
