history

Mechanical scales from Toledo

In 1945, the Swiss engineer Erhard Mettler founded a precision engineering company in Küsnacht on Lake Zurich . He used the substitution principle and developed a single-shell scale for series production. In the laboratory, the single-pan analytical balance gradually replaced the conventional double-pan balance . In the 1950s, measurements were possible to within a tenth of a microgram .

In 1973 Mettler Instrumente AG launched the first fully electronic precision balance, the PT1200. This model was the world's first electronic balance that was approved for the highest accuracy class (Class I). Innovation activity resulted in a wide range of laboratory devices - including automatic titration machines and thermal analysis devices - as well as various products for industry. In the 1980s, the retail division became a third pillar alongside the laboratory and industrial division. Technological progress made it possible to turn shop scales into systems for managing fresh produce. In 1980 Mettler sold his company to Ciba-Geigy .

In 1989 Mettler acquired the Toledo Scale Corporation, the largest US manufacturer of industrial scales based in Columbus , Ohio . Its founder, Henry Theobald, had launched a retail scale with automatic weight and price display in 1901. Mettler Toledo emerged from the alliance of the two companies. In October 1996, Ciba-Geigy AG sold Mettler Toledo to AEA Investors in New York in preparation for the planned IPO. On November 14, 1997, the company closed its initial offering. Its shares have since been traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MTD.

organization

The company is registered in Delaware , USA, but is headquartered in Greifensee , Switzerland . While the stock exchange activities are directed from the USA , the management operates from Switzerland. This comes about through the 1991 merger of Mettler and Toledo.

The sales organization for Germany is located in Giessen and goes back to the scales company Spoerhase, which Mettler bought in 1957. The company is the world's largest supplier of the three most widely used laboratory instruments - balances , pipettes and pH meters .

Mettler-Toledo instruments are used in research and development, including drug research, as well as in quality control in the pharmaceutical, chemical , food and cosmetics industries, among others .
