St. Martin is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of Giesen in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony .

history

The foundation walls of the St. Martin chapel in Klein Giesen point to its origin in the 13th century. Ecclesiastically it was connected to the original parish or archdeacon church of St. Pankratius in Groß Förste . The patron saint of the Martinskapelle was the great forester and meanwhile the Hildesheim archdeacon of St. Andreas . Klein Giesen was looked after by the pastor from Groß Förste. However , the faithful had to go to the Pankratius Church to attend church services and to receive the sacraments . As early as the 17th century, the community complained about the arduous and, especially in winter, dangerous path over the Innerste to the church in Groß Förste. In 1660, the episcopal authority and the archdeacon therefore spoke out in favor of visiting the church in Groß Giesen. Contrary to the episcopal permission, the congregation gave up their request again.

The Reformation , the secularization , the Kulturkampf in Groß Förste had an effect on St. Martin in accordance with the church ties.

In the 20th century, small and large Giesen grew together through the economic structure of potash mining to form one community. Just the geographical proximity to each other favored their merger. In 1940, Klein Giesen was parried to Groß Giesen. In making this decision, the episcopal authority oriented itself towards the economic and political development of both communities. Against the background of the increasing number of Catholics due to the potash industry, St. Martin was raised a year later by the chapel community to the parish vicarie and church community.

Since the small St. Martin's Chapel no longer corresponded to the size of the community in the 1960s, it was significantly expanded from 1971 to 1972, including the old building fabric, especially the tower. The consecration took place on June 3, 1973 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

On November 1, 2014, the parish of St. Vitus was established with its seat in Giesen, to which the subsidiary churches St. Martin in Klein Giesen, St. Pankratius in Groß Förste, St. Johannes Baptist in Klein Förste, St. Andreas in Hasede, St Maria and St. Peter and Paul belong in Ahrbergen. Parish church is St. Vitus in Groß Giesen.
