Church building

Today's St. Martinus Church at Schulstrasse 13 dates back to a new building from 1948. The previous building from 1747 was badly damaged by an air mine in an air raid on March 15, 1945 , the remains of the church were completely destroyed by the air raid on March 21, 1945. In 1948 the church was rebuilt in a simplified form at the old location. Due to the strong growth of the congregation, the church was expanded in the 1960s and consecrated anew on April 3, 1965 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

Today's church building has a classic cross shape with a choir, aisles and a nave. The church can be entered through the main portal in the west and through two entrances to the two side aisles in the north and south. On the long sides the church has windows with flattened round arches, in the main nave made of clear glass, in the side aisles made of stained glass depicting biblical motifs. The interior of the church is in cream and gold after a renovation in 2002 . The center of the visual axis is the altar with the depiction of the burning bush and the gilded tabernacle . On the wall of the choir side there is a mosaic of the triumphant and judging Christ .

In the bronze-clad crossing roof turret from 1993 hang three bells, which are consecrated in the names of the three church patrons St. Martinus , St. Bernward and St. Juliana.

history

The history of the municipality goes back to the early Middle Ages. At that time, the Hildesheim Michaeliskloster owned extensive property in Himmelsthür. A first chapel is attested from this time in the village center at that time (corner of Jahnstrasse / Untere Dorfstrasse), which was consecrated to St. Juliana. This was later replaced by a church in the same place, which was dedicated to St. Martinus. A tabernacle-like stele, which is also used as a station for the Corpus Christi procession , still reminds of the location of the old church .

In 1747, as part of the re-Catholicization of the Diocese of Hildesheim under the Wittelsbach bishops, the church building was rebuilt at its current location. The church as a single-nave building (so-called Jesuit floor plan) was built from limestone rubble and covered with saddle pans. This building had windows in the north and south walls and on the sloping choir. On the roof in the west stood an octagonal ridge turret with a lantern and a pointed, slate-covered spire. The east of the church was dominated by a baroque high altar. This church building was completely destroyed by the bombing raids on Himmelsthür in March 1945.
