history
People settled in Elze before the year 800. At the time of Charlemagne , the place Aula Caesaris ("Kaiserhof") was called Aulica for short , from which the names Aulze and Elze developed. Elze has been the seat of a bishopric for Ostfalen founded by Charlemagne since around 800 under the patronage of the apostles Peter and Paul , who still appear today in the name of the Protestant church in Elze and in the local coat of arms . The Catholic Church of 1936/1953 also commemorates this tradition. To manage this episcopal seat, Charlemagne, who took camps there several times, called the clergyman Gunthar from Rheims. Ludwig the Pious moved the bishopric to Hildesheim in 815 and placed it under the protection of Mary, the Mother of God .
On the evening of November 18, 1824, three quarters of the city was destroyed in a fire and then rebuilt.
Place name
Old names of the place are 826–876 Aluchi, 1068 Alicga, around 1135 Aulica, 1151 Alitse, 1160 Eleze and 1204 Elze. Two lines of tradition stand side by side for the place name: “Aulica / Aulika” and “Alitse, Eleze, Eletse, Elze”. With “Aulica, Aulika” there is obviously a Latinization of “aula” for “Halle, Fürstenhalle”. The second line of tradition is probably based on the Germanic word "ulin" for "lazy, damp, musty".
Incorporations
On March 1, 1974, as part of a municipal reform, the surrounding villages of Esbeck, Mehle, Sehlde, Sorsum, Wittenburg and Wülfingen were incorporated.

coat of arms
New coat of arms from 1956
The current coat of arms was approved in 1956 by the Lower Saxony Minister of the Interior .
Blazon : “Standing next to each otherin blue, the gold nimbly and silver clad Saints Peter and Paul , each with a red book in their left hand; in his right hand Peter holds a golden key , Paul a silver sword with a golden hilt. In front of them a black sign with silver oblique beams , in a red stages oblique beams . "
Foundation of the coat of arms: The two saints Peter and Paul can already be seen on memorial stones and local seals from the 16th century. Since the middle of the 17th century, when Elze became a town, both have been depicted sitting opposite each other in the shield, while in the 19th century the saints were separated by the city colors of silver and blue in the shield. In 1956 the black shield with the stepped sloping beam, which was the old coat of arms of Elze, was combined with the two saints to form the new local coat of arms. |
Old coat of arms from 1939
The city was given the coat of arms on January 12, 1939 by the President of the Province of Hanover . The district administrator from Alfeld presented it on May 23 of the same year.
Blazon : "A silver slanting bar in black, covered with a right-angled meander ribbon in red."
Reasons for the coat of arms: In the early Middle Ages, a noble family called themselves after their residence Elze "de Eleze" and had a sloping beam with a right-angled meander ribbon in their coat of arms, as evidenced by a number of seals still in existence on documents from the 14th century. Based on this model, the city of Elze had given the following coat of arms in a new color scheme. |
