Hameln station was laid out by the Hanover-Altenbekener Eisenbahn (HAE) on their newly built and opened on April 13, 1872 railway line in the east of the city and provided with a wedge-shaped reception building, which was inaugurated on December 30, 1872. On June 30, 1875, the Löhne – Elze railway line, also built by the HAE, was opened and Hameln was now a crossing station . Extensive track systems extended east of the reception building.

On each of the two lines there was a house platform and an intermediate platform , which from 1902 and 1906 were connected to the station building by a tunnel . On October 31, 1897, the railway line to Lage was added, which was introduced into the station on the southern Altenbeken side. Goods sheds and open loading tracks were north of the tracks. Again and again the track systems had to be adapted to the increased traffic.

In March 1921 the station building burned down almost completely and was rebuilt slightly enlarged by November 1925. The reception hall, which was originally at track level, was now placed at street level so that the large flight of stairs could be omitted. In 1934 the station was elevated to the status of a central station, at least for a short time . In March and April 1945, the station was heavily damaged in the air raids on Hameln .

In May 1971 the Hanover – Altenbeken line was electrified, on September 27, 1980 the line to Lage was closed for passenger traffic and finally dismantled by 1985. The passenger trains of the Vorwohle-Emmerthaler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft also ended temporarily in Hameln.

The station building was acquired by Stadtwerke Hameln in 2001 and renovated by them from 2002 to 2006. At the same time, the traffic facilities still owned by DB AG were renewed.

Attached to the station was a large depot south of the tracks with two roundhouse sheds . While one shed was demolished between 1974 and 1977, the other is still there today (2015). To the east of the station area on the line towards Hanover, there is an extensive railway area with the freight station , which is still partially used as such today, but the northern part has been built over by the financial services provider BHW with its headquarters since the early 1990s .

service

There has been a half-hourly connection to the Lower Saxony state capital since 2000 via the S-Bahn line S 5 of the Hanover S-Bahn, and an hourly connection to Paderborn since 2002 . There is still an hourly connection to Hildesheim and Löhne via the Elze – Löhne line on the “ Weser Railway ” (RB 77).

The station has six platform tracks, three each on the Altenbekener (tracks 1-3) and the Löhner (tracks 5-7) side. The station building has a newspaper shop, a kiosk , a bakery and a DB travel center , which is operated together with the Hameln-Pyrmont transport company. The Hameln Bahnhof bus station is located on the station forecourt, which is also the central hub for all city and regional buses in the Hameln-Pyrmont area.
