State capital (Germany)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

State capital in the Federal Republic of Germany is a city that is the seat of the constitutional organs of a federal state , in particular of the state government and the state parliament . Under local law , the state capital is a designation that the state government can give to the city upon application. In contrast, the city-states of Hamburg and Berlin understandably cannot be state capitals at the same time. The use of the designation occurred in the Federal Republic mainly since the 1950s . In January 1953, for example, it was announced that the city of Wiesbaden would be given the title state capital . Before that, the capitals of the federal states simply referred to themselves as cities.
