The velodrome Friedenau was from 1897 to 1904 at the Sportpark Friedenau , then in Berlin , close to the former ring railway station Wilmersdorf Friedenau .

The cycling track was built by the Friedenauer Radfahrer-Verein , founded in 1891 . It later became the property of Berliner Sportpalast GmbH and was managed by Ferdinand Knorr, a well-known Berlin cycling organizer. The track was open, 500 meters long, made of cement and particularly suitable for standing races . The racing cyclist Bruno Büchner opened a racing school at the cycling track. In addition to the cycle track, the grounds of the sports park also included shooting ranges and tennis courts, a gymnasium and fencing hall, restaurants and a park. The grandstands offered space for 20,000 spectators. The sports park is considered the first stadium in Berlin.

One of the last events on the track was the 100-kilometer stalker race The Grand Prix of Europe with the best of the time, Robert Walthour , Piet Dickentman , Tommy Hall and Robl, which Walthour won. The Welsh cyclist Jimmy Michael crashed in 1904 on the track and suffered serious head injuries that contributed to his death in the same year.

UCI-Bahn world championships were held twice on the track : in 1901 Robl won his first world championship title for professional stayers in Friedenau, and in 1902 his second in the same place. In the winter months the interior served as an ice rink. In summer there were also pure motorcycle races on the track, the first in 1898.

In 1899 the interior of the racetrack was prepared for football . In 1901 the BTuFC Britannia leased the interior in 1892 . In 1903 and 1904 the finals for the German soccer championship took place here.

Others

One of the first silent films was shot in 1904 with the title Auf der Radrennbahn in Friedenau , which spoke for the popularity of the racetrack. In the same year, the railway was torn down, because the building contractor Georg Haberland built apartments in what is now the Wagner district .

The Steglitz cycling track was built to replace the Friedenau racecourse .
