Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Paderborn main train station is the main station of the city of Paderborn . It is on the Hamm – Warburg railway , part of the Central-Germany connection from Cologne or Düsseldorf to Thuringia and Saxony . In Paderborn a branch line branches off to Bielefeld ( Senne-Bahn ).

history

The front with a new forecourt in December 2011

The main line was opened between Hamm and Paderborn on October 1, 1850 by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company . The continuation to Warburg took place in 1853. The Sennebahn was added in July 1902. Another branch line was opened in the direction of Büren ( Almetalbahn ) in 1899 . This line was closed in 1981. Recently, there have been considerations to reactivate the route and thus better connect Paderborn / Lippstadt Airport . In addition, new tracks were laid up to the city limits of Paderborn. Another branch line was built in 1906 towards Bad Lippspringe ; it branches off at Paderborn Nord station. In 1965 it was shut down for passenger traffic and is only used by the Benteler plants.

In December 1970, the 25,000 km track of what was then the Deutsche Bundesbahn was electrified near Paderborn Central Station . A plaque in the station building commemorates this milestone. From the summer of 1973 the DB tried to supplement the successful IC network with branch lines. Three pairs of DC trains of the "Intercity Supplementary System" ran between the Ruhr area and Bebra . However, since the hoped-for demand did not materialize, this "IC feeder traffic" was discontinued in the summer of 1976. In connection with the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg , plans were made to expand the connection between the Ruhr area and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (- Munich ) into a regular IC line. After 1990, this resulted in the Central-Germany connection with the goal of Thuringia and Saxony or Berlin . In some cases, ICE trains were also used for this after the timetable change in December 2002 . Since demand did not meet expectations, since December 2007 only IC trains have been running via Paderborn in the direction of Berlin Hbf . Individual offers of long-distance transport , especially in peripheral locations, were removed from the timetable, the entire long-distance transport offer was temporarily called into question.

With the 2010/2011 timetable change, the IC between Düsseldorf / Cologne and Leipzig / Berlin disappeared from the local train service. Since then, only four IC / ICE pairs have been running via Paderborn Hbf: three ICE / IC from the Ruhr area to Dresden Hbf , one ICE daily to Munich , two ICE / IC to Düsseldorf and one ICE to Wiesbaden . On Friday and Sunday an additional IC pair will be driven to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen . The offer was changed again for the 2015/2016 timetable change. The Düsseldorf – Dresden ICE pair was dropped and was replaced by three to five ICs from Cologne or Düsseldorf to Jena , Weimar , Halle (Saale) and Berlin . Since March 2016 it was planned that the double-decker Intercitys (IC2) should run with two pairs of trains per day between Düsseldorf and Weimar via Paderborn. The mission was postponed due to technical errors. The new IC2 can carry almost twice as many passengers as the older IC cars. In the next few years (until 2032), Deutsche Bahn intends to expand the IC connection Düsseldorf - Kassel - Erfurt - Weimar (- Chemnitz ) to every two hours as part of the DB long-distance traffic offensive .Template: future / in 5 years

In December 2015 the local transport association Paderborn / Höxter decided to demand the resumption of rail traffic on the Almetalbahn (railway line Paderborn – Büren) in the new public transport requirement plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This route has a chance of reactivation again after decades. Among other things, a new “Paderborn University / Lieth” station on the Hamm – Warburg railway line was registered as part of the DB station offensive . This is on Driburger Strasse in the east of the city. In addition, the NPH proposed a double-track expansion and electrification of the Senne-Bahn between Paderborn and Bielefeld in the requirement plan.

After the redesign of the area around the station by the city of Paderborn in 2010/11, the plan was to completely demolish the station building in 2012 and replace it with a new building. The completion of the new train station, which is to consist of glass and concrete and will cost 4.4 million euros, was planned for 2013. In July 2012 it became known that the deadline could not be kept. At this point in time, the Bielefeld station management assumed completion in 2015. In addition to an expanded entrance hall and an enlarged retail space, a new bicycle station is also planned. The city of Paderborn will subsidize the new building with 1 million euros.

In February 2016 , the Paderborn-based construction company Bremer AG presented Deutsche Bahn in Berlin and the city of Paderborn with their own plans for the construction of a new central station. According to Bremer, the new main train station will have 6 floors, four of which will be used for a new business hotel. The entrance hall will have two floors and a travel center . In addition to the entrance hall in the direction of the bus station , the lobby for the new hotel with planned 150 rooms and in the other direction (to the city center) typical train station shops are to be built. A newsagent, a bakery, a fast food restaurant and a drugstore are planned. Waiting areas are to be created on the 2nd floor. It is currently (April 2016) unclear where the individual sums of money will come from. However, all parties agree to negotiate. The DB architects' plans for a 1-storey main train station are thus on hold. The new 6-storey main station is to be 20 meters high. It is expected to cost around 10 million euros and be completed by 2022 at the latest.

Transport links

Paderborn is only served by individual IC and ICE trains in long-distance traffic. In regional traffic, several RE and RB lines go to the main station. In addition, Paderborn is the end of a line of the Hanover S-Bahn .

From December 9, 2018, the new Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) will also stop in Paderborn . For the time being, this consists of the well-known RE11 line with new class 462 multiple units (later the RRX), which then connect the Rhineland with East Westphalia every hour instead of every two hours.

tram

The last tram ran in Paderborn on September 27, 1963 from the main train station to the Neuhaus Castle district . Shortly after the closure, the tracks had to give way to new car lanes and the model of a car-friendly city at the time . There was also an overland tram to Detmold . Since it opened in 1900, the tram has been operated electrically and has run on meter-gauge tracks. Despite the growing importance of local public transport , a revitalization of the tram network in Paderborn has not yet been discussed (2019).

Local transport network

The city of Paderborn belongs to the regional local transport association Paderborn-Höxter (“ Hochstift tariff”). In the direction of Bielefeld, Detmold and Soest there are transitional tariffs for the tariff association “Der Sechser” ( OWL Verkehr GmbH ) or the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Ruhr-Lippe (VRL). The NRW tariff applies nationwide . There is no special S-Bahn tariff, but the “S 5 Paderborn Spezial” ticket for 16 euros (one way) has been valid on the Hanover – Paderborn route since August 1, 2015. Since August 2017, the applicable in Westfalen-Lippe Westphalia tariff . This means that the previous Hochstift tariff and all other tariffs in Westphalia-Lippe are no longer applicable.

Take a ride - mobile in the Hochstift

On January 4, 2016, the information center for mobility in the Hochstift, "Mobithek", was opened next to Paderborn Central Station. The Mobithek and the Paderborn / Höxter public transport network are located in the new building on Bahnhofstrasse . The new umbrella brand "Fahr mit - Mobil im Hochstift" is a joint brand of the traffic service company Paderborn / Höxter and the local transport association Paderborn / Höxter. The umbrella brand “Fahr mit - Mobil im Hochstift” is responsible for service and customer information for public transport in the Paderborn and Höxter districts. Since the establishment of a customer center in the main train station could not be realized due to a lack of space, a new, three-story building was built at Bahnhofstrasse 27. “Drive with” officially belongs to the VPH.
