The station Brackwede is after the Bielefeld Central Station main train station in Bielefeld . It was opened with the opening of the Cöln-Mindener Railway in 1847.

Station area

Brackweder Bahnhof has six platform tracks. Track 5/6 was completely renovated as part of the Expo 2000 and the reactivation of the Haller Willem to Osnabrück, the platform was raised to 76 cm and weather protection was installed. The other platforms are only 38 cm high. This also applies to the Sennebahn, although its platforms are mostly modernized in the further course.

Until May 2019, the tracks were accessible via a pedestrian tunnel that led from the Eisenbahnstraße under the railway line and the Ostwestfalendamm to the Brackwede natural swimming pool on the border with the Quelle district . As part of the renovation, it has been renewed since March 2019. The tunnel is the main connection for pedestrians and cyclists from Brackwede-Mitte to the Quelle district and to the natural swimming pool, which was reopened in 2009, and has barrier-free access on both sides. During the modernization, barrier-free access with elevators to the platforms will also be built. The rear part of the tunnel, which crosses under the Ostwestfalendamm, was embellished by young people with a continuous graffito, which showed the "skyline" of Brackwede.

There are park & ride parking spaces at the train station. There are also covered bike racks and lockable bike boxes. When the old DB machines were exchanged for the new ones with touch-screen technology , the device in Brackwede was dismantled and not replaced by a new one, because with a few exceptions only trains stop at Brackwede station that already have a machine. Recently, local traffic tickets for the Westphalian tariff have been sold at the kiosk in the station building . There are also toilets here. In the immediate vicinity, in addition to the Ostwestfalendamm and the natural swimming pool, there is a mosque of the Turkish-Azerbaijan Cultural Association e. V., a scrap yard, a Turkish / Russian supermarket, the Luttertal with the Lutterkolk and the Lutterquellen as well as the Gestamp GMF company (formerly ThyssenKrupp Umformtechnik).

The station also hit the headlines due to several accidents. In May, October and December 2009 and on March 14, 2014, people died while trying to cross the railway tracks. In July 2018, a woman fell into the track bed and was hit by a train and killed.

Comprehensive modernization work began in March 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. For this purpose, the through tunnel according to Quelle was closed for the duration of the work.

Connection to local transport

The station can be reached by tram and buses. Their stops are about 300 m away, accessible via stairs (not barrier-free). There were plans to extend bus lines that end at Brackweder Stadtring to the train station and thus improve connections between train and bus. After moving line 94 back to Brackweder Church, this only affects two lines and in particular no pure city line. In the 1970s, city buses ran from the train station on a half-ring line to the Südring and to Brackwede Church (route similar to district line 123). This would also enable the IKEA store to be connected to the train station today .

International bus station Bielefeld

On March 30, 2009, the previous three stops for international long-distance bus lines in Bielefeld (main station, Sennestadt Ratio-Markt and Kesselbrink ) were completely replaced by the station at Brackweder Bahnhof. Mainly connections are offered to Poland and Eastern Europe (including the Baltic States), but also to Western and Southern European countries (France, Portugal, England, Belgium). Among other things, buses go to the Polish cities:

Since the liberalization of the national long-distance bus traffic, these also go to the Brackweder train station (including Flixbus ). When the bus station was relocated to Brackwede, the middle part of the station building there was completely renovated from the inside and equipped with a waiting room for travelers and toilets. There is also a travel agency and a kiosk in the station building.

modernization

With the exception of the platform on tracks 5/6 and the middle part of the station building, the Brackweder station is in a very dilapidated condition. The passenger tunnel was damp, the other platforms are only 38 cm high and there were neither display boards for the trains nor barrier-free access to the platforms. As part of the Haller Willem expo project, all train stations along the route to Osnabrück were modernized. Only the Brackweder station was not completely renovated. It is not included in the station modernization offensive 2 (MOF2). The responsible DB Station & Service AG estimated the cost of a renovation to be around 4–5 million euros. With the funds from the economic stimulus package 2 , however, DB Station & Service AG installed dynamic text displays for passenger information . At its meeting on December 18, 2014, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) decided to include the Brackwede train station with an investment volume of 13.3 million euros in its program for the modernization of train stations and stops in the Westphalia-Lippe area to take into account the negotiations with DB Station & Service AG. This also happened mainly against the background that the planned start of the preliminary service to the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) from December 2018 requires the expansion of further stations in North Rhine-Westphalia in order to enable the necessary platform heights for barrier-free boarding. The renovation began in March 2019.
