Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
The Bielefeld main train station is the main station in the region of East Westphalia-Lippe . In addition to the size of Bielefeld , it is important as a junction between long-distance and regional traffic. The station belongs to station category 2 and is located on the Bielefelder Pass .
investment
Bielefeld main station is located in the north-west of the city and separates the new station district from the city center. The entrances to the underground tram in the inner city are not far from the reception building . Opposite is the local conference center with a conference hotel, the Bielefeld town hall .
It is a through station on the Hamm – Minden railway line running from southwest to northeast through the city . The platforms are individually roofed.
history
When the Hamm - Minden section of the Cologne-Minden Railway opened on October 15, 1847, the station in Bielefeld only had a temporary half-timbered building. The first stone station building was completed in 1849. It was rebuilt and expanded in 1885. At that time, the train station was located far north of the city because there was enough flat terrain available there. To the southwest of the train station, the route runs close to the old town, but already climbs to the Bielefelder Pass . The distance of almost one kilometer between the old town and the train station gave the impetus for the development of local public transport in Bielefeld . Over the next few decades, residential and industrial buildings in the city grew closer to the train station and finally far beyond.
In the first decades of express train traffic, not all trains stopped in Bielefeld. As the seat of a government president and a fortress with a large garrison, Minden was more important in the Prussian state than Bielefeld, which was then only characterized by industry.
The number of travelers rose sharply, so that a new building in Bielefeld was necessary. In 1907 the construction of today's reception building began. The Art Nouveau building with natural stone facades was opened on May 1, 1910. In the west wing there was a waiting room for the first and second as well as one for the third and fourth class, in the east wing there were offices and staff apartments. The ticket office and baggage counter were in the entrance hall. Initially the station building had doors to an adjacent house platform. When the Hamm – Minden line was rebuilt to four tracks between 1911 and 1917, the passenger and baggage tunnels were created and the station got six platform tracks on three platforms, which were hardly changed until the beginning of the 21st century. As a result, the first track ran right along the building, as it is today, and all platforms could only be reached through the tunnels. Stylistically coordinated with the reception hall, but without the natural stone façade, a goods handling building was built on the north side of the tracks.
The station survived the heavy bombing raids on Bielefeld in September 1944 almost undamaged, so that the facade has remained almost unchanged to this day despite several modernizations of the building. A memorial on the station forecourt commemorates the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps, which also took place from Bielefeld station during the Nazi dictatorship.
After the Second World War, between 1946 and 1947 the main administration of the railways of the American and British occupation areas was located in Bielefeld , from which the German Federal Railroad emerged in 1949 . The last time the Deutsche Bundesbahn, General Operations Management West, Bielefeld acted as the publisher for the official timetable for the winter timetable from October 2, 1949 to May 13, 1950.
The importance of the station in the railway system was strengthened by the electrification of the main line Hamm - Hanover on September 29, 1968 and the introduction of the ICE connection between Cologne and Berlin in the 1990s, on which Bielefeld is a system stop with clocked connections to the regional lines.
Rebuild in 2000
When laying central sections of the Bielefeld Stadtbahn underground, it was decided not to set up a central stop under the main train station. The reason for this is also the World War II bunker located under the station forecourt, the removal of which would be too costly and time-consuming. For this reason, the central tram stop "Hauptbahnhof" was built 150 meters south-east. It is connected to the station forecourt by a roofed passenger conveyor belt (popularly known as “the bag”). At the beginning of the 21st century, the old freight yard north of the railway line was demolished to make room for an entrance and exit to the Ostwestfalendamm city motorway and to the new station district .
The construction measures included the widening and lengthening of the pedestrian tunnel with a breakthrough to the north as well as the barrier-free modernization of the existing platforms and the listed historic reception building. Additional tracks and a new platform to the north were also built. The passenger station was expanded to seven platform tracks on four platforms.
The expansion and modernization conversion should originally be completed in 2000. However, after the general contractor went bankrupt, construction work was suspended for a period of 17 months due to unresolved financial circumstances. Since the renovation and expansion took place during ongoing operations, this was associated with considerable loss of comfort for the passengers. The construction work could only be completed in September 2006. A total of 26.2 million euros was invested.
The station is now directly connected to the new station district on the north side, which is intended to increase the attractiveness of the city. The local restaurants, discos , wellness and leisure facilities benefit from the direct connection to the train station. The station district and station also support each other; For example, the car park in the new district is also used by rail travelers.

Long-distance and local trains run from Bielefeld main station in the Ruhr area - Hanover route and regional trains within the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region. Because the station only has seven platform tracks, these are partially occupied by two trains at the same time.
