The Bad Bentheim Station is a train station in Bad Bentheim , Lower Saxony . It is on the Almelo – Salzbergen railway line . There is an option to change to the Bad Bentheim – Nordhorn – Neuenhaus line of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn .

history

Station building around 1900

The station was opened with the Almelo - Salzbergen railway in 1865. In 1895 the line from Bentheim to Neuenhaus of the Bentheimer Kreisbahn was opened, whose station Bentheim Nord was northeast of the state train station. In 1908 this line was extended south to Gronau, while the state railway was crossed with a bridge to the west of the station.

In the 1950s the Gildehaus station was closed. Since then, Bad Bentheim station has been the last German station on this route before the border between Germany and the Netherlands . Here, the border police and customs checked the passengers on the cross-border trains until the border controls between the participating states ceased to exist with the second Schengen Agreement .

Since the line was continuously electrified in 1976 , the Dutch traction current system with 1500 V DC and the German with 15 kV AC voltage at 16.7  Hz have come together at this station . To make operations easier, practically all contact line sections above the station tracks can be switched over individually. If a train is not hauled by a multi-system locomotive, it must be re-hauled in Bad Bentheim. However, it can be maneuvered with electric traction , which is not possible in many other system change stations. Driving with traction vehicles with different catenary voltages is also possible at the same time. The individually switchable catenary sections allow both voltages to be fed in for almost any travel option. Catenary-independent shunting locomotives are not required. Because of the high overcurrents in direct current operation, the main tracks in the station as well as the main tracks in the direction of the border to the increased cross-section are spanned with double contact wire.

traffic

Bad Bentheim is connected to the long-distance traffic by the InterCity of line 77, which runs every two hours . The trains run between Amsterdam Centraal via Amersfoort Centraal and Osnabrück - Hanover and Berlin .

Before the extension of the Wiehengebirgs-Bahn ( RB 61 ) to Hengelo , the trains coming from Rheine , Osnabrück and Bielefeld turned in Bad Bentheim station. Due to technical difficulties with the purchase of electricity in the Dutch electricity network, a replacement rail service had to be carried out first. The rail link finally started operating on February 26, 2018.

The Bentheim Railway runs along the station from Achterberg (from Gronau until 1981) via Nordhorn and Neuenhaus to Coevorden in the Netherlands. The former administration building of this railway company is also located near the train station. Scheduled passenger traffic was resumed as RB 56 on July 7, 2019, after it was initially planned to start at the end of 2018.

Station building

As part of the Regiopa project , which envisaged the revival of local rail passenger transport , the Bentheimer Eisenbahn completely redesigned the reception building and the area around the station for around 4.4 million euros. Among other things, a bike station was built. The opening took place on December 7, 2018 after a three-year construction period.

The barrier-free renovation of the station in spring 2016 caused a sensation due to the delayed renovation of the reception building by the Bentheimer Eisenbahn. The platform, which was increased to 76 cm, blocked several doors leading to the platform until the new entrance was completed. The representative of the railway company recommended that passengers use the station via the non-barrier-free access (to the right of the main entrance) during the transition period. The famous window found a place in the station hall after the renovation of the station.

In September 2019, the Pro-Rail Alliance named Bad Bentheim station as station of the year .

additional

From December 2010 to December 2013 there was a regional train line called Grensland Express . It was operated as part of a pilot project by Bentheimer Eisenbahn AG together with the Dutch transport company Syntus , between Bad Bentheim and Hengelo via Oldenzaal. At the end of the project it became apparent that there was not enough demand and the line was discontinued.
