Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof is the main train station of the Lower Saxon city of Osnabrück . It was designed in 1895 as the only two-level tower railway station still in existence in Lower Saxony and serves as a junction for long-distance and regional traffic, which is used by 20,000 travelers and visitors every day.

History of the station

Osnabrück main station was opened on April 24, 1895 as the "Centralbahnhof". It replaced the Hanover station to the west on the Löhne – Rheine railway line and the Bremen station to the north on the Bremen – Münster railway line . The Tecklenburger northern runway could communicate to the central station after gauging the route from 30 March 1935 passenger trains. Passenger traffic on this route between Osnabrück and Mettingen was given up on September 25, 1965.

In 1963 the Federal Railroad decided on a major modernization program for Osnabrück Central Station. This 40 million DM program comprised the electrification of the main routes and the modernization of the signal boxes. The construction of the central signal box "Of" (Osnabrück-Fahrdienstleitung) began in August 1963, and the signal box went into operation on September 4, 1966. This signal box replaced ten smaller signal boxes around the main train station. In and around Osnabrück main station, the shape signals , which were replaced by light signals , also disappeared due to the new track plan pushbutton interlocking .

One week after the new central signal box went into operation, the first train from Münster to be hauled by an electric locomotive reached the city on September 12, 1966 . This was received on track 1 by Ferdinand Erpenbeck and the Federal Minister of Transport Hans-Christoph Seebohm , who took him on the inaugural trip to Münster. The northern part of the taxiway in the direction of Bremen was electrified in 1968, the Löhne – Rheine railway line took place on September 29, 1974 in the direction of Rheine and on May 30, 1976 in the direction of Löhne. The age of steam locomotives ended in Osnabrück in 1977 with the conversion of the last trains to diesel or electric operation.

On June 1, 1984 the passenger train service to Bielefeld via the Haller Willem was stopped.

Since 2000

Since November 1, 2001, the newly built Bahnhofsgarage multi-storey car park can be used, which also has access to platform 1. The multi-storey car park with 700 spaces was built for 20 million DM by the Osnabrücker Parkstätten Betriebs-Gesellschaft (OPG). The passenger traffic over the Haller Willem, which was discontinued in 1984, was resumed on June 12, 2005 after the successful reactivation.

Before the Katholikentag 2008 in Osnabrück, lifts were installed that lead from the platforms. Previously there were only luggage lifts for the lower platforms, which have now been replaced by new passenger lifts. On the upper platforms in front of the elevators there were only baggage carousels that led to the track tunnel, these were removed when the elevators were being installed.

The station building was renovated in 2010 as part of the economic stimulus program 1 . In agreement with the monument protection, white plastic windows were replaced by brown wooden windows. These wooden windows not only correspond to the original appearance of the station, but also meet modern energy-saving requirements. The interior of the station hall and the pillars in the hall were also given a new coat of paint.

investment

In the upper level, the double-track , electrified main line Hamburg  - Bremen  - Ruhr area ( Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg line ) runs from northeast to south-west , which connects with the double-track, electrified main line Amsterdam  - Hanover  - Berlin, which runs from west to east on the lower level ( Löhne – Rheine railway line ) crosses. The tracks of the upper and lower platforms are connected by a ring across the Schinkel district .

In addition, two non-electrified, single-track lines branch off. One in the southeast to Bielefeld ( Osnabrück – Bielefeld railway line ), the other in the north. This forks in Hesepe into two lines: on the one hand the line to Wilhelmshaven via Cloppenburg  - Oldenburg (Oldb) ( railway line Oldenburg – Osnabrück ), on the other hand the line to Delmenhorst via Vechta ( railway line Delmenhorst – Hesepe ). In addition, the railway to Westerkappeln-Recke branches off at Osnabrück-Eversburg .

In the course of the economic stimulus programs, the reception building is to be refurbished with energetic measures by DB Station & Service AG . New seating and information media will also be installed in the waiting area. In the coming years, Deutsche Bahn plans to fundamentally modernize the platforms and roofs of Osnabrück Central Station as part of a renewal program for several train stations in Lower Saxony for around 10 million euros.

In addition, the Sp Dr S 60 type relay interlocking belonging to the station and dating from the 1960s is to be replaced by two electronic interlockings ("Osnabrück Hbf Po ESTW-UZ" (HOOX) and "Osnabrück Hbf Pu ESTW-UZ" (HOUX)) become. These ESTW are also intended to replace the surrounding signal boxes as far as Lembruch and Natrup-Hagen or Velpe and Wissingen. there are eight of the type Dr S 2 , five of the type Sp Dr S 60 in addition to the main station , two mechanical interlockings in Velpe from 1950 and one in Lemförde of the type Sp Dr S 600 . Construction of the ESTW HOOX (route Bremen - Wanne-Eickel) started on May 23, 2016, and it is to be put into operation in four stages from November 2017 to December 2019. Construction of the ESTW HOUX should start in 2019; it should be put into operation in November 2020 (west) and August 2021 (east). Both ESTW are to be operated on site. The total investment amounts to 175 million euros. In addition to the two ESTW-Z, 13 ESTW-A and around 1200 point machines and signals will be installed and 32 points removed, 9 level crossings renewed and 17 level crossings adapted.

The city of Osnabrück is also planning to provide an additional exit from the main train station to Hamburger Strasse, called “Terminal Ost”. The platform access is to be extended from the main hall to track 5 in order to connect the Hasepark industrial park and thus relieve the traffic situation on the station forecourt.

Passenger numbers

The main station is used by around 20,000 people who get on and off the trains every day. When counting in 2011, an average of 18,996 users in local rail transport was determined. The number has grown by 98% since 2002, when 9,582 local rail passengers were traveling per day.

Humboldt Bridge

In the western area of the lower level, the 100-meter-long Humboldt Bridge crosses the tracks and platforms. The bridge, which can only be used by pedestrians and cyclists, leads from Buerschen Strasse to Theodor-Heuss-Platz in front of the train station . The northern side of the bridge ends on the higher Klushügel, which is why the bridge can be entered at ground level. On the south side, which is on the station forecourt, a difference in height must be overcome using the stairs or an elevator. Until shortly before the opening of the elevator by then Mayor Boris Pistorius on December 1, 2010, the height difference had to be overcome by means of a steep ramp or an old reinforced concrete staircase. The old staircase was replaced by a modern steel staircase and the ramp by an elevator.

The bridge built in 1990 from bongossi wood replaced a bridge built in 1953 from prestressed concrete . The prestressed concrete bridge, which had to be replaced in 1988 due to the risk of collapse, had in turn replaced a pre-war reinforced concrete bridge during its construction.

When the wooden bridge was built in 1990, the use of tropical wood promised a longer lifespan than a structure made of reinforced concrete. However, no sensible water drains were taken into account during construction, so the bridge currently has to be replaced again. In the future, a stainless steel bridge will now run over the tracks. Since this has not yet been done despite the possibility of connecting the platforms to the bridge by means of a staircase, this should possibly be taken into account in the new construction. This would have the advantage that the city center could be reached more quickly from platforms 11/12 and 13/14, as there would be no detour through the station building.

Connecting curves

The upper and lower track levels are connected to one another via several connecting curves. The oldest connecting curve is the Kluskurve northwest of the station. It is used exclusively for freight traffic. The Münster and Bremerkurve run south-east of the former freight yard. Running northeast through the Schinkel district, there is the Schinkel curve, which is divided into the Löhner and Stahlwerk curve on the lower level.
