Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof is the most important train station in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . There is also an underground station for the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn .

With around 270,000 travelers a day, the main train station was the eighth most frequented long-distance train station of Deutsche Bahn in 2017 . The crossing station , which has been in existence since 1891 and has been rebuilt twice (1932–1936 and 1980–1985) with 16 platform tracks today, is one of the 21 stations in the highest price class  1 of DB Station & Service and is located on the southeastern edge of the city center between Konrad-Adenauer-Platz (formerly Wilhelmplatz), which is also used by four tram lines and a large number of bus routes can be reached, and Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz in Oberbilk .

There were the following three train stations in Düsseldorf:

Both the Bergisch-Märkische and the Cologne-Mindener train station stood in the way of the city's expansion to the south, the building of Friedrichstadt . In addition to the desired merging of stations and parallel routes after the nationalization of the Rhenish-Westphalian railway companies between 1879 and 1882, this was another reason for the new construction of the central station.

Old building (1891)

The old central station was opened on October 1, 1891 as Düsseldorf central station. After only three decades, however, it had become too small, and its style no longer corresponded to contemporary tastes.

New building (1932–1936)

In November 1930, eight of the submitted designs in an architectural competition for the redesign of the main station were presented to the public at the end of the 1920s. In 1932–1936, the reception building was torn down and the new building was built in a functional architectural style based on a design by the Reichsbahndirektion Wuppertal by the architect Eduard Behnes.

Characteristic of its exterior shape, which has not changed to this day, are the perforated brick facade with structured natural stone elements and the striking clock tower , which originally also served as a water tower for filling steam locomotives .

The main station was badly damaged in the Second World War . This damage was repaired until 1959.

Remodeling (1980–1985)

At the end of the 1970s, the upcoming construction of the inner city tunnel of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn and the east-west S-Bahn between Hagen and Mönchengladbach required extensive reconstruction of the main station. The demolition of a steelworks east of the main station also made it possible to open it to the Oberbilk district . Construction began in 1979 and lasted almost ten years.

The redesign of the main train station and the shell of the underground station were completed on December 16, 1985. The opening of the underground line between the old town and the main station followed on May 7, 1988. Finally, the S 8 and S 11 S-Bahn lines went into operation on May 29, 1988.

The two next to each other central platforms with four tracks of the underground station should be built directly under a central station passage in order to ensure the easiest and fastest possible change between light rail and rail / S-Bahn. That is why the installation of the underground station went hand in hand with the new construction of the railway platforms, their roofing and a much wider station passage with direct access to the city platforms at the location of the previous central passenger tunnel.

As a special feature of the main station, a closed platform hall was created , the four ships of which do not run parallel, as usual, but across the tracks and platforms. The new central passage was equipped with shops throughout and received an additional eastern entrance and exit. A new travel center was built roughly in the middle of the passage to replace the ticket office south of the main reception hall.

During the construction work, the railway operation continued to run largely undisturbed and without capacity restrictions, by first building the two new tracks 19 and 20 with the associated platform, which are now used by car travel and special trains, and then gradually demolishing only one platform with its two tracks and was restored immediately after the excavations and the construction of supports and ceilings for the underground station and the passage. In addition to the still accessible north tunnel, a wooden makeshift bridge over the tracks in the south area of the station at the height of the clock tower gave passengers a second access to the platforms.

In the place of the former ticket office between the main reception hall and the south entrance in the clock tower, the so-called market hall was built, in which food and gastronomic services were offered until the end of June 2009. In this way, the connection between the main reception hall and the now closed south entrance remained. The northern passenger tunnel was provided with passenger elevators and linked to the central passage via two cross passages. In addition, a hotel (today: Ibis Duesseldorf Hauptbahnhof ) and a discotheque (today: Teatroo ) were built behind the historic brick facade in the area of the former first-class waiting room . The construction of a multi-storey car park in the immediate eastern vicinity of the main train station created 1685 new parking spaces.

With the Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz , a second station forecourt was set up on the east side of the main station. Several buildings in the postmodern style were built on this square . The adult education center and the central library of the city libraries are located in one of these buildings . Starting from Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, new pedestrian and cycle paths through the Oberbilk district to the Volksgarten were set up as part of the preparations for the 1987 Federal Garden Show . To the north of Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, Ludwig-Erhard-Allee was built to connect the main train station and its car park to Kölner Strasse, and to the south of it, Willi-Becker-Allee was built to connect the same buildings to Ellerstrasse.

The crossing-free threading of the east-west S-Bahn in the middle of the main station for a change from and to the other S-Bahn in the north-south direction on the same platform was made possible by the construction of an additional double-track railway bridge in the northern track apron and the Construction of a double-track railway tunnel in the southern apron made possible.

Further development

On December 5, 2018, the financing agreement for the new electronic interlocking in Düsseldorf was signed. It is to control a 43 km long area up to the Leverkusen city limits to Cologne and with around 2,000 actuating units will be one of the largest interlockings of Deutsche Bahn. The main construction work is scheduled to begin in 2021.

Traffic significance and function

Station sign under roof

The Düsseldorf main station is frequented by around 250,000 people every day. All passing passenger trains stop. This makes the station one of the 21 stations in the highest price class from DB Station & Service . In addition to Düsseldorf Airport, it is one of two long-distance train stops and one of three regional train stops in Düsseldorf.

Trains for long-distance passenger rail transport , the North Rhine-Westphalian regional transport lines and the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn from the east ( Erkrath , Wuppertal , Hagen ), north (airport, Duisburg , Essen , Oberhausen ), south ( Cologne , Solingen ) and west meet at the main station ( Neuss , Dormagen , Mönchengladbach , Aachen ) on eight platforms on top of each other (tracks 4-7 and 9-20). There is a car train loading point on the northeast side of the station . The station has a total of 20 main tracks.

According to the DB, 169 long-distance trains, 423 regional trains and 550 S-Bahn trains serve the station every day (as of 2008).

The four-track underground underground station can be reached by the light rail lines that run on trunk line 1 and trunk line 2 .

Tram and bus stops as well as taxi ranks can be found on the western station forecourt (Konrad-Adenauer-Platz). Further taxi stands can be found on the east side of the train station, north of Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz. There are also rental car stations - located in the central parking garage.

The central long-distance coach station in Düsseldorf is located in the area of the former post office parcel halls north of the main station. A conversion of the halls with the installation of service facilities for long-distance bus travel as well as a rehearsal stage for the Düsseldorf theater on the upper floors was realized.
