The Remscheid-Lennep train station is after the Remscheid Hauptbahnhof the main station in Remscheid city. The station is located west of Lennep's old town and belongs to station category  5.

history

The then still independent city of Lennep was first connected to a rail link in 1868. A committee made up of personalities from Barmen and the Lennep district set out to connect the industrial and commercial district of Lennep (iron and steel goods, cloth, etc.) to Cologne as early as 1844. If a line from Barmen-Lennep-Cologne through the Dhünntal was initially planned, the Chamber of Commerce in Lennep asked the Minister for Trade, Industry and Public Works in Berlin in June 1858 for a branch line from Rittershausen via Lennep to Remscheid, which was then approved and in 1868 in Was put into operation. The desire to continue towards Cologne, however, persisted. Instead of going through the Dhünnthal, it ran from 1876 to Wermelskirchen and reached Opladen via Burscheid in October 1881.

The old station building

Lennep soon owned more railway lines than its neighboring cities with the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen – Opladen railway , the railway to Remscheid , the Wuppertal Railway and indirectly the Wippertal Railway, and therefore quickly developed into a rail hub in the Bergisches Land . For this reason, too, there was a separate depot at the station from 1893 to 1960 .

In 1929 the city of Lennep was incorporated into Remscheid. The station was, however, only on 18 May 1952 by the station Lennep in station Remscheid-Lennep renamed and was always more important than the Remscheid Hauptbahnhof . This changed, however, with the closure of the Wuppertal Railway in 1956 and the Wippertal Railway in 1986. In 1995, freight traffic between Remscheid-Lennep and Wipperfürth was finally abandoned.

From the beginning of 2009 to June 2010 the station was rebuilt. Two outer platforms were created , which are connected by an underpass. In addition, the old station building has been partially restored and tracks that are no longer required have been removed.

In autumn 2014 the old station building was sold to a private investor. A large practice for physiotherapy, four residential units and a kiosk with a café should be built there by October 2015. For this purpose, the facade of the building was completely renovated.

From 1986 only the regional train RB 47 ( Der Müngstener ) served the Remscheid district of Lennep. On December 15, 2013, this regional train was converted into the S 7 S-Bahn line, integrated into the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network and is currently operated by Abellio Rail NRW . In rush hour traffic, the direction to Solingen is additionally reinforced by a train, which, however, does not stop in Remscheid-Güldenwerth and Solingen-Schaberg for operational reasons.

Since its inauguration on April 22, 2012, a combined foot and cycle path on the former railway line to Opladen has started right at Lennep station . A foot and bike path branches off from this in Bergisch Born on the former railway line to Marienheide . Since July 1, 2017, there has been a connection to the Bergischer FahrradBus in the direction of Opladen or Marienheide shortly after Born .

Bus transport

Remscheid has been integrated into the long-distance bus network for the first time since November 2016 . This means that there is an option to travel to Berlin from Lennep. The long-distance buses serve the station once or twice a day and stop at bus platform D. In addition, the Remscheid municipal utilities, in cooperation with other transport companies, serve the Remscheid-Lennep station. The Lennep district has a bus network that is almost independent of Remscheid, which makes it one of the most important transport hubs in the city and the Bergisches Land.

Night express

On Fridays, Saturdays and on the nights before a public holiday, there is an hourly night bus service to Remscheid until around 3 a.m. The connection to Gummersbach runs on Saturday night every 120 minutes.

In addition to the regular bus service, Lennep train station is also served by a special bus that drives to the leisure facility in Kräwinklerbrücke during the summer holidays, as well as a shared call taxi line to Wermelskirchen.
