The station Hilden is one of two railway stations Westphalia North Rhine- city Hilden in Mettmann . The second is Hilden Süd . It is located on both the Düsseldorf - Solingen railway line, which is now only used for passenger traffic, and the Troisdorf - Mülheim-Speldorf railway line, which is now only operated for goods traffic , while the Hilden Süd stop is exclusively on the Düsseldorf - Solingen railway line . Both stations are served by the S1 line of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn . Hilden train station is about 10 km southeast of Düsseldorf main station and about 7 km west of Solingen main station . Like most other train stations in the Mettmann district, it is particularly important for commuters to the city of Düsseldorf.

Location and structure

Entrance building of Hilden train station.

Hilden train station is on the western edge of the city center. It has four through tracks. The eastern tracks 4 and 5 are the through tracks of the Troisdorf - Opladen - Hilden - Düsseldorf-Eller - Mülheim-Speldorf freight train line and have no platform. The western tracks 1 and 3 are located on the Düsseldorf - Solingen railway line, which is used by S-Bahn trains on the S1 and S7 lines, and have a central platform that can be reached via stairs and barrier-free via elevators. Until the cessation of passenger traffic between Hilden and Opladen in 1983 - previously only 3 pairs of trains Monday to Friday for many years - the trains on this line also stopped at the only existing platform. They were routed to / from Opladen via two connecting tracks at the southern head of the station. A connection between tracks 1 and 4 is still available today, the second connection that connected tracks 3 and 5 with the same level crossing of track 4 was dismantled after passenger traffic ceased. Track 2 no longer exists; it was originally at the northern end of the platform and was last used as a turning track for the Hilden - Opladen trains. On the south side of the station that crosses railroad Dusseldorf - Solingen the freight train line Troisdorf - Opladen - Hilden - Dusseldorf-Eller - Mülheim-Speldorf on a flying junction .

The station building, which was opened in 1874, is located at the east exit of the station on the side facing the city. It is a listed building and is now used as a restaurant. The station has two exits, to the west on Otto-Hahn-Straße and to the east on Bahnhofsallee .

The signal box of the station, a relay signal box of the type "Sp Dr L60" from 1979 is located at the north end of the station. Before it went into operation, there were two electromechanical bridge signal boxes at the north head and at the southern end of the platform, which were demolished immediately after the relay signal box went into operation.

At the western entrance, the station has park-and-ride and bike-and-ride facilities.

The Hilden S bus stop for bus routes O3 and 784 is located at the reception building. It has stops with DFI displays and barrier-free bus platforms. The 783 bus stops at the Hilden S Westseite bus stop on Otto-Hahn-Straße.

history

The railway line Troisdorf - Opladen - Hilden - Düsseldorf-Eller - Mülheim-Speldorf and with it the Hilden station was opened by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft on November 18, 1874. Previously, from December 20, 1845, the Benrath station, 4 km further west, on the main line of the Cologne-Minden Railway Company, was the station for Hilden. Both routes run largely parallel, which was a result of the competition between private railway companies in the 19th century. In the course of Bismarck's nationalization policy , both the Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft were nationalized with effect from April 1, 1881. The uniform operational management by the state meant that the Troisdorf - Mülheim-Speldorf line through Hilden became primarily an important freight train axis with insignificant and later completely discontinued passenger traffic. Electric operation on this route began when the timetable changed on May 27, 1962.

Just 6 km further east, the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft opened another north-south route on September 25, 1867 with the Gruiten - Cologne-Deutz railway, which connects today's Wuppertal with Cologne. At the same time, a branch line to Solingen Weyersberg was opened from the then Ohligs-Wald train station (later Solingen-Ohligs, today Solingen Hbf ) .

On October 1, 1891, together with the first Düsseldorf main station , a new railway line was opened from there to Eller station on the Troisdorf - Opladen - Hilden - Düsseldorf-Eller - Mülheim-Speldorf line, creating a continuous rail connection between Düsseldorf Hbf and Hilden duration. With the commissioning of the Hilden - Ohligs-Wald railway on January 3, 1894, it was extended via Ohligs-Wald to the then Solingen main station. With the commissioning of the Müngstener Bridge on July 15, 1897, a further extension was made via Remscheid to Lennep . The trains on the Düsseldorf Hbf - Remscheid-Lennep - Wuppertal-Vohwinkel line had to use the heavily loaded Troisdorf - Opladen - Hilden - Düsseldorf-Eller - Mülheim-Speldorf freight train line in the Düsseldorf-Eller - Hilden section until 1979 , which often led to delays. In the course of the structural preparations for the start of the S-Bahn service on September 28, 1980, the Düsseldorf-Eller - Hilden section was expanded to 4 tracks. The commissioning took place on July 30, 1979. At the same time as the start of operation of the S7 to Solingen-Ohligs , the commissioning of electrical operations between Hilden and Solingen-Ohligs took place on September 28, 1980 .

With the commissioning of the S-Bahn traffic on September 28, 1980, the station was initially served by the S7 Düsseldorf Airport - Düsseldorf Hbf - Hilden - Solingen-Ohligs line, supplemented by individual journeys on the S1 Dortmund line in the following years during rush hour Hbf - Duisburg Hbf - Düsseldorf Hbf that have been extended beyond Düsseldorf Hbf to / from Hilden or Solingen-Ohligs . With the timetable change on December 13, 2009, the network of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn was revised. The S7 was omitted, its tasks were taken over by two other S-Bahn lines. Its north branch ( Düsseldorf Airport Terminal - Düsseldorf Hbf ) fell to the S11 and its south branch ( Düsseldorf Hbf - Solingen Hbf ) fell to the S1. Since then, Hilden station has been served by the S1 line. Line number S7 has been used since December 15, 2013 for the diesel-powered line Solingen Hbf - Remscheid-Lennep - Wuppertal Hbf , whose trains run twice in each direction from Monday to Friday during rush hour to and from Düsseldorf Hbf and also stop at Hilden station .
