Bike-and-ride facilities in China and the Netherlands

The term bike and ride or short B + R ( Engl. "Bike and ride") describes a link principle in the transport planning . Originally, this term refers to the journey to a connection point (usually a train station or a stop ) by bicycle. However, more recent definitions of terms also include other forms of association between bicycles and public transport (see section “Forms”).

The aim of this principle, which is applied worldwide, is essentially to increase the attractiveness of local public transport and to expand the catchment area of train stations and stops.

to form

A distinction must be made between the following types of linkage:

  • The bicycle serves as a feeder to public transport (so-called pre-transport).
  • The bicycle serves as a pick-up from local public transport (so-called subsequent transport, rarely also referred to as ride and bike ).
  • The bicycle serves both as a fetcher and a collector and is carried in the public transport vehicle (so-called bicycle transport ).

The following basic types of bike-and-ride systems are distinguished:

Problems

Disordered parking of bicycles at the Göttingen train station

Both the parking of the bicycles at the connection point and the transport of bicycles cause various problems. Due to the high number of users at larger train stations and stops, the existing parking facilities are often insufficient. As a result, the bicycles are usually parked in a disorderly manner. At some connection points, additional parking options cannot be created or can only be created at a very high (financial) expense (for example by renting private space) due to the limited space. If only unsecured bicycle parking facilities are available at the connection point, bicycle theft or vandalism can also be a problem.

Various problems also arise when taking bicycles with you. Not every connection point is designed to be barrier-free , so getting on or off and changing by bike can be difficult. Furthermore, many transport companies exclude a transport guarantee or even prohibit the transport of bicycles during certain blocked times and / or in certain vehicles completely.
