A bicycle station , also Radstation or Swiss Velostation is a space, which meets at least three basic functions:

Other services such as the sale of bicycles, spare parts and bicycle accessories or tourist information can also be offered. Bicycle stations sometimes offer professional bicycle cleaning in bicycle washing facilities or thorough hand cleaning of the entire bike, including gear hubs, etc., as well as bicycle leasing. Some bike stations, e.g. B. the bicycle station at Cologne main station , also offer the construction of bicycles made to measure, precisely tailored to the body of the cyclist. These stations are often located at train stations ( bike and ride ).

Radstation is a word / figurative mark protected by the ADFC North Rhine-Westphalia.

In mid-2012 there were almost 100 bicycle stations in Germany, 66 of them in North Rhine-Westphalia . The biggest Radstation Germany is the bicycle station Münster am Hauptbahnhof Münster .

A bicycle station should not be confused with a bicycle garage or a bicycle parking garage, because the latter only offer the pure parking of bicycles without any services. The bike station south at Karlsruhe main station is an exception - it only offers parking space and no services.

Similar to parking garages for cars, there are bicycle parking garages in larger cities in order to make better use of the limited inner-city space and to relieve the street space of parked bicycles (see also stationary traffic ). Closed and guarded bicycle parking garages also offer protection for high-quality bikes for a fee. Such parking spaces can be made available for collection at any time using electronic key systems. An alternative option are covered bicycle spaces with lockable, rentable bicycle storage boxes . With regard to the parking density, it should be said that it is usually a two-story parking facility at the bicycle parking garage.

The BASF has a large bicycle parking garage at its plant in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . In other countries, especially Denmark and the Netherlands , there are also covered bicycle parking spaces or parking garages in some major cities.

Bicycle stations are often run and maintained by non-profit organizations in which people with disabilities, reduced earning capacity and / or other health restrictions work. This enables them to have a fixed daily structure and a corresponding income. In addition to promoting cycling as an environmentally friendly and health-promoting form of transport, bike stations are also given special support due to this social aspect.

The alternative to the bicycle station is to take bicycles with you on buses , trains or on passenger ships . This combination of individual and public transport means that longer distances can also be covered by bike without any problems. Getting to the bus stop by bike , then taking your bike with you and then continuing your journey by bike increases the possibilities for using public transport . Here, subsidies such as free bicycle transport in some federal states or transport associations or the establishment of BahnRadRouten (cycle paths) contrasts with the restrictive measures taken by individual rail operators (e.g. hotline reservations for local trains).

For some years now, Graz has had an unoccupied but camera-monitored bike station without a workshop with a repair box in front of it. At the end of March 2016, the - new - Vienna Central Station received its first bike station with a garage, repair stand for self-help, rental and workshop.

The Dutch city of Utrecht has had the largest bicycle parking garage in the world with 12,500 spaces since 2019.
