Bike station at the main train station in Münster

The Münster Hbf bicycle station is the largest bicycle station in Germany and is located in Münster, Westphalia .

history

The bike station was opened on June 12, 1999 by the then Federal Minister of Transport, Franz Müntefering, directly in front of the main train station on Berliner Platz, in order to curb the unauthorized parking of bicycles on the station forecourt. Therefore, with the redesign of Berliner Platz, an old, underground passage was converted into a bicycle parking garage. The only visible part is the glass structure, which ensures that there is a bright atmosphere in the completely underground bike station. The costs amounted to around 13 million DM , half of which was borne by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

A pedestrian underpass built in the 1970s was integrated into the construction of the bike station. This gives the station an exit to Windthorststraße and cross-free access to the city center.

service

The bike station provides 3,300 spaces. A bicycle-related service is also offered: a bicycle repair workshop and a bicycle washing facility. The offer is rounded off by bicycle rental and lockers, tourists can take advantage of tourism advice.

In order to make better use of the space in the bike station, the bikes are parked in two-story stands . Season ticket holders can also rent a personal space for an additional charge, which is always kept free for them. Personal or valuable items should not be left on the bikes, as customers can enter the car park freely and there are no boxes in which bikes can be locked. But there are lockers for z. B. backpacks or rainwear offered. Bicycle trailers, tandems and recumbent bikes can be parked in special areas.

target group

Two thirds of the users are professional commuters who come to Münster by train or bus and then cycle to work, which is why the bike station opens at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays.

workload

The bike station was already very well received in the first year, 2,300 to 2,900 season tickets (annual or monthly tickets) were sold, and depending on the weather and time of year, the other places were completely booked by one-day users.

Award

In 2000, the bike station won the Renault Traffic Future Award for traffic architecture .
