A bicycle garage , including a bicycle shed , bicycle storage box , bicycle box , bike box or bike box , is a lockable place to park and store bicycles . Bicycle garages protect the stored bicycles from the weather and potentially offer greater protection against vandalism and theft. The bike box can also be equipped with a charging facility for electric bicycles . A bicycle cage, however, can be seen from the outside, e.g. B. by lattice walls instead of solid walls.

Bicycle garages are available for both public and private use. They are offered for sale in various designs by hardware stores.

Case studies

Hamburg

Since the 1980s, there have been lockable bicycle garages in Hamburg ( Hamburger Fahrradhäuschen ) in the form of round houses with space for twelve bikes each. In 2012, around 400 such bicycle shelters could be found on Google Maps.

The city of Düsseldorf is currently reviewing the acceptance of bicycle shelters. The architects Atelier Fritschi + Stahl designed a bicycle shed for this, which offers space for 10 bicycles on the area of a car parking lot. It is characterized by an archetypal gabled house shape in combination with a distinctive color scheme. Several of these houses are currently in the city of Düsseldorf.

Dortmund

If there are at least ten people interested in a bicycle garage, an application is submitted to the city via the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD). According to VCD, the creation costs are around 6,000 euros. The construction is subsidized by the district council with 4,000 euros and costs users a one-time fee of 150 euros and around 20 euros per year. The parking spaces can be resold. The VCD is also responsible for the maintenance of the houses. The bikes are insured in the buildings. The users form a GbR and conclude a leasing contract with the VCD.

“Bicycle shelters in public space” are part of a cycle support concept adopted by the SPD and the Greens in the Dortmund district representation downtown-west . In 2015 there were 14 such bicycle garages in Dortmund. The project received second prize in the 2006 national competition “best for bike” and the city of Dortmund's Agenda Seal in 2005.

Muenster

The bicycle city of Münster is one of the first locations where private bicycle garages were used on a large scale. Münster is the city with the most bicycle thefts in German-speaking countries, which is why a protected bicycle station has been set up at the main train station and more and more regionally manufactured bicycle garages are being built into private homes.

Linz

In the Upper Austrian city of Linz , Linz AG, as a provider of local public transport and energy supply, is testing the acceptance and use of bicycle boxes at the “Wambacher Straße” stops in the Ebelsberg district and “Landgutstraße” in the Urfahr district in summer 2012 . The paid offer can be booked via SMS or smartphone app. In addition, a web application from home is also being considered for regular operation. The box is opened and closed using the mobile phone and should be usable for customers of all Austrian mobile phone providers.

Paris

In Paris, the Véligo project provides access to locked bicycle parking facilities.

Rotterdam

Bicycle garages in Rotterdam

In the Dutch port city of Rotterdam , bicycle garages (ndl. "Fietshangar" or "fietstrommel") have been in use across the board since the mid-1990s, which, due to their small size, can also be installed on car parking spaces. According to the manufacturer, they are designed with brackets for five bicycles as standard. In some Dutch cities, part of the money from municipal funds to reduce CO 2 emissions is used to set up fietshangars. You can apply to the city administration for a free space close to your place of residence, for which rent is paid. If there is no free space available, five applicants from a neighborhood are brought into contact with one another in order to look for a suitable area for a new drum in consultation with the city. A cooperation company puts the total number of bicycle drums in the Rotterdam metropolitan area at around 600, the majority in the city center.
