In order to find suitable parking spaces for bicycles, especially in old building areas, the first permits and grants for bicycle shelters were approved in Hamburg-Altona in 1985 on the initiative of the then GAL District Member Martin Schmidt . In 1993 the “Hamburger Fahrradhäuschen” project was started by the then authority for urban development . Since then, the respective responsible municipal authority and / or the respective district office has funded the purchase of permanent accommodation for bicycles.

The bicycle sheds are mostly twelve- sided round structures made of steel and wood that can accommodate twelve bicycles. These are hung with the front wheel on a specially developed rotating carousel. Access is through a double-leaf entrance door. The bicycle sheds have an outside diameter of about three meters and the floor space is about six square meters. Production and assembly are mainly carried out by employers from the second labor market .

It can be set up on private and public land, whereby a special usage permit free of charge can be issued for public land. The cost of buying a bicycle shed in 2012 was around 5,500 euros, of which the City of Hamburg will take on 50%, with a maximum of 3,000 euros as a grant. The users bear the running costs for care and maintenance.

In February 2012 there were more than 330 bicycle shelters in Hamburg. Individual bicycle houses of this type are also in Dortmund and Hanover.
