history

Administrative history

The present-day town of Heiligenhaus emerged from the village of Heiligenhaus, which historically belonged to the Leubeck dynasty in the Angermund office of the Duchy of Berg . Since the French era , Heiligenhaus and the surrounding towns have belonged to the mayor's office of Velbert , which received the Rhenish municipal code in 1846 and the Rhenish town code in 1856 . On April 1, 1897, the area of the old honors Hasselbeck , Hetterscheidt , Isenbügel , Leubeck , Oefte and Tüschen was detached from the city of Velbert and combined to form the new rural community of Heiligenhaus, which has since formed its own mayor's office . Oefte was ceded by Heiligenhaus to the city of Kettwig on April 1, 1936 . The community of Heiligenhaus received town charter in 1947.

mayor

The city of Heiligenhaus was last awarded a coat of arms, a seal and a flag on March 20, 1947.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Divided by blue and red by a raised silver (white) rafter; below a silver (white) anvil, crossed above with silver (white) pliers and a silver (white) hammer. "

The community, which was elevated to the status of town in 1947, has housed so-called house smiths since the 17th century, whose tools are supposed to represent the iron industry of that time, especially lock and fittings manufacture. The Düsseldorf heraldist Jupp Held designed the coat of arms in 1937 in the Bergische colors red, silver and blue. The municipality was given the coat of arms by the Oberpräsident in Koblenz on November 27, 1937, and again on March 20, 1947 as a new city by a document from the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia. In contrast to most of the city and municipal coats of arms in the Bergisches Land, the Heiligenhaus coat of arms does not show the Bergisch lion .

seal

“The city has an official seal with the city coat of arms. Divided by a raised rafter; below an anvil, crossed above with pliers and a hammer. "

flag

"The flag has three stripes in a ratio of 1: 1: 1 from blue to white to red and shows the city coat of arms in the center."

The 2005 competition for a new logo for the city of Heiligenhaus was won by qualified designer Sven Hornscheidt with the following design: A three-part signet in the colors red, green and blue with the accompanying lettering "City of Heiligenhaus" in antiqua script. The blue symbolizes the waters of the Stauteich, Angerbach- and Vogelsangbachtal recreational areas , the green stands for the Bergisches Land and the red shows a white shed roof silhouette below it, symbolizing the economic productivity of the city.

Over 500 players and approx. 25 teams play handball in the HSG Velbert / Heiligenhaus. The HSG is supported by more than 50 trainers, instructors and supervisors. The youth work is actively promoted by the HFV association.

On the border to Homberg is also the Meiersberg airfield, where both glider and powered flight are operated. The kite and model building festivals that also take place on the airfield and alternate annually are also known beyond the city limits.

In addition, 45 km of marked hiking trails in the vicinity of the “industrial city in the green” lead through the Anger and Vogelsangbach valleys to the Ruhr valley .

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2008, Heiligenhaus had a good 9,000 employees subject to social security contributions, most of them in the medium-sized metal processing industry. The city is important as a location for the supplier industry for German automobile production; locks, fittings and latches are produced. Castle and building hardware industry is traditionally located in Heiligenhaus; the city is located in the key region of Velbert / Heiligenhaus . The best- known industrial company is Kiekert AG as a manufacturer of car locking systems for VW and BMW, among others . In 2000, Kiekert AG was acquired by the financial investor Permira for € 530 million through a debt-financed takeover . Due to the debt burden that was transferred and the poor economic situation on the automotive market, the company threatened to go bankrupt in 2006 . However, the bankruptcy could be averted.

The entire industry in Heiligenhaus had a turnover of 987 million euros in 2008.

Road traffic

A section of the federal motorway 44 runs through the urban area . This begins on the Ratinger Landstrasse between Heiligenhaus and Homberg-Meiersberg and leads from there via Velbert to Essen . At the Velbert-Nord motorway triangle, the 535 federal motorway branches off from this section to Wuppertal . Another section of the A44 is expected to be built between the Heiligenhaus junction and the Ratingen-Ost motorway junction by 2022 , where it will join the A44 section to Düsseldorf , Düsseldorf Airport , Krefeld and Mönchengladbach , as well as the federal motorway 3 crossing at the Ratingen-Ost motorway junction in the north Direction to Duisburg , Oberhausen , the Netherlands , Ruhr area , Hanover , and in a southerly direction to Cologne , Koblenz , the Rhine-Main area ( Frankfurt am Main , Wiesbaden ), Nuremberg , Passau and Austria will connect.

Federal road 227 also runs through the city . In the west it connects to the A3, A52 (Essen – Düsseldorf), A524 at the Breitscheid motorway junction .

Rail and bus transport

Panoramic cycle path at the former Heiligenhaus train station

There is no longer a railway connection in Heiligenhaus, and passenger transport by rail at Heiligenhaus station was discontinued in 1960. The Niederbergbahn , which is now closed , was built from 1913 to 1926 and ran from Kettwig via Heiligenhaus, Velbert and Wülfrath to Vohwinkel . Its construction resulted in massive debt for the city in the 1920s. After the First World War, the Reichsbahn only wanted to continue building the route if the city would contribute a third of its financing; this was a sum that the city could not raise. Velbert offered to finance the construction if Heiligenhaus could be incorporated, which was refused. Finally, there was support from the city of Kettwig and the Düsseldorf-Mettmann district .

Until the Second World War , freight and passenger traffic were quite low. However, since the industry in Heiligenhaus and Velbert developed into important arms manufacturers and the number of commuters to Velbert increased enormously, the route was busy during the Second World War. When the routes around the big cities were increasingly destroyed by bombing attacks, long-distance trains also ran on the Niederbergbahn. This came to an end when the retreating German troops blew up the Ruhr Bridge near Kettwig in April 1945 ; until 1951 all trains in Kettwig ended in front of the bridge. Passenger traffic was completely stopped as early as 1960, the route to Kettwig was shut down and converted into a cycle path in 1980. On December 28, 1994, the last freight train drove from Heiligenhaus to Velbert.

The railway line runs over two large natural stone viaducts in the Heiligenhaus city area. A reactivation of the Niederbergbahn as part of a so-called Circle Line from Wuppertal via Velbert and Heiligenhaus to Düsseldorf is always under discussion. In order to preserve the band of the route as a whole, however, a pedestrian and bicycle path was first created on the disused route. The Niederbergbahn panorama cycle path was completed in summer 2011 and now offers a continuous connection between Kettwig and Vohwinkel.

On October 11, 1899, the 6.5 km long electric tram line from Velbert to Heiligenhaus was opened. This was shut down in 1952. From 1899 to 1923 a steam-powered small train ran from Heiligenhaus to Hösel . The 770 bus now runs on the entire route of these two former tram lines.

The bus lines 770 to Hösel S and 771 to Ratingen Mitte connect to the S 6 Cologne - Düsseldorf - Ratingen Ost - Essen - line 770 at Hösel station, line 771 at Ratingen Ost station. Hösel is the closest train station. In addition, there are two connections via bus lines 772 and 774 via the Isenbügel district to Kettwig and to the Kettwig Stausee S-Bahn station located there (only accessible with line 772). In an easterly direction, the lines 770 and 771 connect to Velbert Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof and the 774 connect to the Niederberg Clinic . There is also an express bus (SB 19) to Essen via Velbert and the inner-city line O 17.

For the entire public transport system applicable tariff of the transport association Rhein-Ruhr and collective space border of NRW fare .
