The plan is to extend the A 44 from the Ratingen-Ost junction to the Heiligenhaus - Hetterscheidt junction and to close the gap. The 9.8 km long new building is expected to cost around 222 million euros and will not be ready until 2022 at the earliest . The groundbreaking ceremony was on April 26, 2010, but only part of the new building was started. Due to the changes made to the plans, the environmentalists no longer see species protection, especially for the little owl , being preserved.
In June 2018, the section of the A44 between the Heiligenhaus Hetterscheidt junction and the new Heiligenhaus junction near the city limits of Ratingen was opened.
The second section between the Heiligenhaus junction and the Ratingen-Ost motorway junction is under construction, and completion is
expected in 2022 . Construction costs of 109 million euros are estimated for this section. The section between the Ratingen Ost motorway junction and the Heiligenhaus junction still has to be bypassed via the B227 through Heiligenhaus-Unterilp, Ratingen-Hösel, Ratingen-Lintorf and Ratingen-Breitscheid as well as the A3.Design and state of development
