The Oberhausen motorway junction (abbreviation: AK Oberhausen; short form: Kreuz Oberhausen ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia . This is where the federal autobahn 2 ( Oberhausen - Hannover - Berlin ), the autobahn 3 ( Emmerich - Cologne - Frankfurt am Main - Passau ) and the autobahn 516 intersect .

geography

The motorway junction is located in the Ruhr area in Oberhausen . It is located about 20 km northwest of Essen and about 90 km south of Nijmegen . As a traffic junction , it connects the A 3 from the Netherlands with the A 2 and is therefore on one of the most important east-west connections in Germany.

Design

The motorway junction is designed as a clover leaf. Since the A 3 runs from north to west through the motorway junction and the A 2 to the east and the A 516 to the south begin there, the motorway junction is a TOTSO variant, i.e. i.e., if you want to stay on the A3, you have to turn at the cross. Because if you come from the west on the A3 and do not turn at the cross, but simply continue straight on, you end up on the A2. The same applies when coming from the north: If you continue straight on the A3 instead of turning right, you don't stay on the A 3, but changes to the A 516.

A reconstruction of the cross to unbundle the traffic flows is planned. Construction is scheduled to start in 2021.

history

In 1961, with the completion of the A 3 between Wesel and Oberhausen, the so-called "Holland Line", the motorway junction was put into operation. At the same time, the "Oberhausen connection" (now the A 516) was opened to traffic. This is where the A 2 and the A 3 crossed at the time, until the Oberhausen junction became the starting point of the A 2 after the reorganization of the German motorways in 1992.

The Oberhausen motorway junction was originally planned as the Oberhausen motorway triangle, but was then built as a junction with the connection to today's A 516.

From November 2010 the bridge of the cross was renewed. First the western part of the bridge was demolished and renewed from November 2010 to October 2011, then the eastern part.

particularities

In the middle of the motorway junction, on the connecting ramp Arnheim - Dortmund , there was a guard from the motorway police until November 2016 .

Traffic volume

Around 170,000 vehicles pass the cross every day.

Further planning / conversion plans

Due to the already high traffic volume, which is likely to continue to increase in the future, the State Office for Road Construction NRW is planning to convert the cross. Following early public participation and approval of the draft planning , the planning approval documents are currently being prepared.
