The Hilden motorway junction (abbreviation: AK Hilden ; short form: Hilden cross ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is located in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and forms a corner of the Düsseldorf motorway ring . This is where the federal autobahn 3 ( Oberhausen - Frankfurt am Main - Passau ) and the A 46 ( Heinsberg - Wuppertal ) intersect .

geography

The motorway junction is located in the area of ​​the city of Hilden , which also gave it its name. The surrounding cities are Düsseldorf , Erkrath , Haan and Solingen . It is located about 15 kilometers east of downtown Düsseldorf and about 30 km north of Cologne . If you follow the A3 further north from here, you will pass the Neandertal .

The Hilden motorway junction is number 19 on the A3 and number 28 on the A46.

history

The Autobahn 3 has existed in this area since 1936, when it was built as part of the construction of the Reichsautobahn from Cologne to Düsseldorf. Today's Hildener Kreuz was created as a simple junction with a connection to the west on the Unterbach – Hilden road. The A 46 was built here in 1972 as the B 326 (Wupperschnellweg) .

Renovation 2010

The cross was rebuilt from April to September 2010. The Wuppertal - Düsseldorf route has been widened to two lanes in order to improve the flow of traffic. In addition, the acceleration lane was lengthened to make it easier for trucks to merge onto the A3. Due to the heavy traffic there, there have often been disruptions in the past. In addition, the surface of the A 3 between Mettmann and the Hilden junction was renewed. The costs for all of these conversion measures amounted to around 2.7 million euros.

State of development

The cross has the shape of a shamrock . The A 3 and A 46 have six lanes at the intersection. Originally, all ramps were single-lane. As part of the renovation in 2010, the Wuppertal – Düsseldorf ramp was expanded by one lane.

The central bridge structure of the A3 over the A46 built in 1966 is no longer able to cope with today's traffic load and is therefore being rebuilt by the State Office for Road Construction in North Rhine-Westphalia . The construction work started in 2018 is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

On the A 46, the junction forms a double junction with the connection to Landesstraße 403 (AS Hilden).

Traffic volume

Around 235,000 vehicles pass the cross every day. This makes it one of the busiest road junctions in North Rhine-Westphalia .
