The motorway triangle Düsseldorf-Süd (abbreviation: AD Düsseldorf-Süd ; short form: Dreieck Düsseldorf-Süd ) connects the freeways 46 (section Düsseldorf – Wuppertal) and 59 (section Düsseldorf – Leverkusen). It is located about one kilometer west of the Elbsee between the Düsseldorf districts of Eller and Hassels in North Rhine-Westphalia .
Design
The motorway triangle was opened as a half-leaf clover in 1971 at the latest . At the time, it was planned to expand the triangle into a cross by closing the gap on the A 59, which was interrupted here, to the Duisburg-Süd motorway junction . The route through the built-up Düsseldorf was initially planned to run parallel to the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line and then via the now- autobahn-like federal highway 8 . This plan, which was later discarded, required a conversion to a right-hand trumpet by 1983 at the latest . The highways 46 and 59 are four lanes here.
modification
The Autobahn 46 is currently being expanded to six lanes. The triangle will be upgraded for larger traffic flows and unbundled by further branches from and to the neighboring Düsseldorf-Eller junction. The renovation measures are intended to reduce chronic traffic jams, at least in this area of the A 46. They shouldn't be completed before 2021.
Section 1: North of the A46 (under construction)
In the first phase of construction, the focus was on unbundling traffic in the northern area of the motorway junction. The traffic flows from the different directions of travel are now guided on individual lanes. Traffic coming from Wuppertal on the A46 and wanting to leave Düsseldorf-Eller is directed to the exit via a separate lane around the motorway junction. Drivers who come from the A59 from Leverkusen and want to continue in the direction of Düsseldorf / Neuss will also benefit from the unbundling of traffic.
Finally, from spring 2017, the expansion of the parallel lane at the motorway junction will begin.
Section 2: South of the A46 (under construction)
At the moment the traffic unbundling in the southern area of the motorway junction is being built. To this end, new structures will be built outside the traffic areas (trough and crossing structures including the associated ramps).
From spring 2017, the narrow section in the ramp will be widened from the A59 to the A46 in the direction of Wuppertal. This also closes the gap in the hard shoulder.
From summer 2017, further preparatory work will be carried out for the six-lane expansion of the A46 in both directions. Among other things, crossings between the main carriageways are being built, dividing strips are being expanded and new guard rails are being set up for the provisional traffic management during the expansion phase.
Section 3: Widening the A46 (in planning)
The preliminary work such as the expansion of the parallel railways should be completed by mid-2018. This will be followed by the six-lane expansion of the main route of the A46. It is planned to do this with the least possible traffic disruption. First of all, the direction of travel to Düsseldorf will be expanded, followed by the main lane in the direction of Wuppertal.
Section 4: Connection of the new structures (in planning)
In the final construction phase, the ramps of the new trough and crossing structure will be connected to the roadway in the southern area. This step can only take place afterwards, as otherwise the parallel lane in the direction of Wuppertal would not be available for traffic management during the widening of the A46.
Accompanying work
In addition to the core work of the reconstruction of the motorway triangle, accompanying construction work is taking place. The focus is on noise protection, drainage and the creation of compensation measures for interventions in nature and the landscape.
Traffic volume
The cross was used by around 147,000 vehicles every day in 2015.
