The motorway junction Wuppertal-Nord (abbreviation: AK Wuppertal-Nord ; short form: Kreuz Wuppertal-Nord ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region . It connects the federal freeway 1 ( Heiligenhafen - Cologne - Saarbrücken ; E 37 ) with the federal freeway 43 ( Münster - Wuppertal ) and the federal freeway 46 ( Heinsberg - Bestwig ), as well as with the federal highway 326. As one of the few in Germany, the cross is not completely plan-free and at the same time has a very unusual design.

geography

The motorway junction is located in the area of the city of Sprockhövel in the Ennepe-Ruhr district , directly on the city limits to Wuppertal and Schwelm . The closest parts of the city are Nachbarebreck , Linderhausen , Gangelshausen , Hobeuken and Stefansbecke . It is located about 12 km northeast of Wuppertal, about 50 km northeast of Cologne and about 25 km southwest of Dortmund .

The Wuppertal-Nord motorway junction has junction number 92 on the A 1, number 23 on the A 43 and number 38 on the A 46.

history

The motorway junction was built in the 1960s. First of all, a junction of the federal highway 326 was built on the then A 11 and today's A 1. At the end of the 1960s a motorway junction was built to the west of the federal highway, which connected the new A 77 (today's A 43) and connected with the A 11. The B 326 was expanded until the early 1970s and upgraded to the A 201, today's A 46, in 1972. During the construction of the motorway junction, which was partly built in the shape of a “clover leaf”, no connecting ramps were built between the A 11 and the A 201 / B 326, so that some connections are not possible via the cross.

To the east of the central bridge structure of the A 46 over the A 43, the A 46 is interrupted and leads as a 650 m long end of the B 326 to the L 551 ( Schwelmer Straße ) between Sprockhövel and Schwelm. The original plan was for the A 46 to continue parallel to the A 1 to Hagen, sometimes only a few hundred meters away. This would have turned the Wuppertal-Nord motorway junction into a motorway pentagon.

particularities

Connections not free of height

To this day, the motorway junction has not been extended so that some connections in the cross lead over the B 326, which is regulated by traffic lights . The connections affected by this are:

  • A 1 from Cologne - A 46 towards Düsseldorf
  • A 1 from Dortmund - A 46 towards Düsseldorf
  • A 1 from Dortmund - A 43 towards Bochum
  • A 43 from Bochum - A 1 in the direction of Dortmund
  • A 46 from Düsseldorf - A 1 in the direction of Dortmund

In addition, there is traffic to and from the B 326 / L 511, which also crosses the motorway connections that are not free of elevations. This leads to complex traffic routing, which can be seen in the sketch opposite.

The inner-city road Eichenhofer Weg crosses the autobahns in the area of the junction three times, the A 46 being passed over and under and the connecting ramps between the A 1 and the A 43 and from the A 46 to the A 1 by a 143 m long bridge be overstretched.

State of development

The A 43 and A 46 have four lanes up to the motorway junction, the A 1 has six lanes throughout. In the area of the cross, the B 326 also has four lanes. There are connections between all the routes, five of which are not level-free and are regulated by traffic lights. The connecting ramps between the A 1 and A 43, from the A 43 to the A 46 and from the A 46 to the A 1 in the direction of Cologne have two lanes, as is the unplanned connection from the A 1 from the direction of Dortmund to the A 46. The other connections are single-lane.

In addition to its function as a motorway junction, the Wuppertal-Nord junction also serves as a junction with the B 326 / L 511. From there, there are connections in and from all directions of the motorways concerned.

traffic

The A 46 plays an important role in Wuppertal's city traffic and serves as a relief route for the B 7 that runs through the city in the valley . In addition, the A 46 is used as a southern bypass for the east-west connections through the Ruhr area. As a result, it represents an important connection to the eastern Ruhr area as well as to northern and eastern Germany. The A 43 that ends here serves as an alternative route for the A 1, so that the cross is also important in north-south traffic.

Traffic volume

The cross is used by around 162,000 vehicles every day.

outlook

In a project costing 21.6 million euros, according to the State Office for Road Construction NRW, the motorway junction is to be expanded or converted in the future without any plans. To this end, the state company received the order from the federal government to prepare a study to replace the previous traffic routing with traffic lights . For this purpose, two bridges and two underpasses will probably have to be built. In 2009 the draft, for which an environmental impact study is already available, should be completed. This is followed by the actual plan approval process , the public plan design and the tendering process , so that construction could have started in mid-2014. The construction time is expected to be two and a half years. Current plans include the start of construction in 2021. The costs should now amount to 40.3 million euros.
