The Herne motorway junction (abbreviation: AK Herne ; short form: Herne cross ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region . It connects the federal highway 42 ( Emscherschnellweg ) with the federal highway 43 ( Münster - Wuppertal ).
geography
The motorway junction is in the urban area of Herne , in the Herne-Mitte district . The closest districts are Holsterhausen , Eickel , Mitte and Baukau . It is located about 20 km west of Dortmund , about 8 km north of Bochum and about 15 km northeast of Essen .
To the northeast of the cross is the Nordfriedhof Kaiserstrasse, to the northwest the Herne power station .
The Herne motorway junction has junction number 21 on the A 42 and number 14 on the A 43.
history
The cross was opened to traffic in 1968 with the completion of the first section of the A 42. At that time it was built to link the Emscherschnellweg with the EB 51 (replacement federal road), the planning of which was later replaced by the A 43. In the mid-1970s, the cross was expanded again with the construction of the A 43.
Design and state of development
Both motorways have four lanes. With the exception of the A 43 north - A 42 east and A 42 west - A 43 south routes (both two-lane), all connecting ramps are single-lane.
Since the cross is bounded in the northeast by a cemetery and in the southwest by Cranger Straße, no indirect connecting ramps could be installed there. Instead of a clover leaf, the motorway junction was designed as a windmill with indirect ramps to save space .

Traffic volume
The cross is used by around 143,000 vehicles every day.
