The creation of hiking trails in Vogelsberg began in the 19th century. The Vogelsberg is one to 773  m above sea level. NN high low mountain range in North and Central Hesse .

The Vogelsberger Höhen-Club (VHC), founded in 1881, led the way in setting up these hiking trails. At the end of the 19th century , it opened up and made famous the Vogelsberg, one of the hitherto unknown low mountain ranges in Germany, with the creation of the first hiking trails . The VHC road network is currently 1,600 km long. The oldest path, the "Vulkansteig", also called "Vater-Bender-Weg" after its founder, leads 118 km from Frankfurt over the Hoherodskopf to Alsfeld.

In the 2000s, tourism organizations, municipalities and the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park designated further hiking trails that are characterized by their thematic importance and their hiking quality.
