The Münster-Süd motorway junction (abbreviation: AK Münster-Süd ; short form: Münster-Süd cross ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia near Münster . It connects the federal highway 1 ( Heiligenhafen - Cologne - Saarbrücken ; E 37 ) with the federal highway 43 (Münster - Wuppertal ).

geography

The motorway junction is located in the city of Münster in the Münster-West district . The closest districts are Albachten and Mecklenbeck . It is located about 10 km southwest of Münster city center, about 45 km north of Dortmund and about 50 km southwest of Osnabrück .

The Münster-Süd motorway junction has junction number 78 on the A 1 and number 2 on the A 43.

history

Originally the motorway junction was designed in the shape of a clover . Due to the increase in traffic from the Ruhr area to the north on the A 43 and the simultaneous expansion of the previous six-lane A1 between the Münster-Süd and Münster-Nord intersections, the shape of the cross has been improved. At the beginning of 2003, work began on building a bridge across the motorway junction towards the A1 in the north direction. After almost 2.5 years of construction, this throw was officially opened to traffic on August 12, 2005. The renovation of the entire motorway junction cost around 15 million euros. The bridge structure required for this is 412 meters long and overcomes a height difference of 15 meters between the two motorways . What is special about this is the incremental launching method with an arc with a radius of 340 meters.

The turning lanes that were no longer needed were then canceled or removed. The rest of the interchange was kept in the shape of a clover leaf. It is therefore only possible to a limited extent to turn on the cross. There are no turning options on the A 43 in the direction of Münster and the A 1 in the south.

Between 2010 and 2014, the A1 was expanded to six lanes in the area of the motorway junction. The two bridges built in 1965 over the A 43 will be dismantled and rebuilt one after the other.

Traffic volume

The cross is used by around 134,000 vehicles every day.
