The Westkreuz Frankfurt is a motorway junction in Frankfurt am Main . This is where the federal highway 5 ( Hattenbacher Dreieck - Frankfurt am Main - Basel ) and the federal highway 648 ( Wiesbadener Straße ) cross.
geography
The West Cross extends over the boundaries of four Frankfurt districts: Rödelheim in the north, Bockenheim in the east, Griesheim in the south and Sossenheim in the west. The cross is located about 6 km west of downtown Frankfurt. Immediately to the east of the cross, the Westerbach flows into the Nidda , which runs exactly under the cross and is crossed by eight bridges. Two of them carry the directional lanes of the A 5 and the A 648, the others the four turning ramps.
The areas east of the cross on both sides of the A 648 are used as allotment gardens. To the west along the north bank of the Nidda lies the Sossenheimer Unterfeld , which belongs to the western arm of the Frankfurt green belt . South of the Westkreuz and the Nidda between the A 5 and the Niedwald lies the small settlement Am Neufeld in the Griesheim area .
Westkreuz Frankfurt is number 19 on the A 5 and number 3 on the A 648.
Development condition and design
The A 5 has six lanes in the north and eight lanes in a southerly direction to the Darmstädter Kreuz as one of the few German motorway sections. There are four lanes on the A 648. The crossings from the A 5 to the A 648 in an easterly direction (Frankfurt-Mitte) are two-lane, all others are single-lane.
The cross has in the south-west quadrant of an operating junction , the entry ramp as a function of a Behelfsanschlussstelle can be released. This is used primarily at Messe Frankfurt events to direct traffic from the large parking lots on Rebstock to the motorway in a southbound direction.
The Westkreuz Frankfurt is one of the few motorway junctions in Germany built as a windmill . In this case the cross has additional indirect ramps.
