The Gambacher Kreuz (also: Autobahnkreuz Gambach ) is a motorway junction in Hessen in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region . It connects the federal highway 5 ( Hattenbacher Dreieck - Basel ; E 451 ) with the federal highway 45 ( Sauerlandlinie ; E 41 ).
geography
The motorway junction is mostly located in the urban area of Munzenberg in the Wetterau district , but parts of the tangent ramps are also located in the urban area of Pohlheim in the district of Gießen . The closest districts are the eponymous Gambach (belonging to Münzenberg), Holzheim (belonging to Pohlheim) and Eberstadt ( belonging to Lich ). It is located about 15 km south of Gießen , about 40 km north of Frankfurt am Main and about 20 km southeast of Wetzlar .
The Gambacher Kreuz has junction number 11 on the A 5 and number 35 on the A 45.
history
The Gambacher Kreuz was created through the construction of the so-called Sauerland line , the A 45, from Dortmund to Gießen. The connection ended at the existing A 5 for the time being. Thus, until the construction of the A 45 to Aschaffenburg, today's cross was referred to as a triangle , although due to the still missing connection from the A 45 to the A 5 in the direction of Bad Hersfeld, it was de facto only was a motorway fork. At this motorway triangle, however, preliminary work has already been done for the planned further construction. Due to the already strong traffic flows from the Ruhr area to the Rhine-Main area, the connection was made with two lanes from the start.
Since 2010 there has been a traffic control system in the area of the cross .
Planning
There are plans to expand the A 5 from the Gambacher Kreuz to the Hattenbacher Dreieck with six lanes throughout. For this purpose, the bridge on the eastern lane over the state road 3132 was demolished and replaced by a new building. The A 45 in the direction of Dortmund is also to be expanded to three lanes in each direction in the future.
Design and state of development
The motorway junction was laid out as a clover leaf with a two-lane, semi-direct connecting ramp from the A 5 from Frankfurt / Main to the A 45 towards Dortmund. The connection from Dortmund to Frankfurt also has two lanes. In the area of the motorway junction, both motorways have four lanes. After leaving the intersection area, the A 5 will continue in six lanes in the direction of Frankfurt. In addition, preliminary work has already been done that will enable the A 45 to be expanded to six lanes at the intersection in the direction of Aschaffenburg. However, due to the weak traffic flow and the abandoned extension of the motorway beyond the Rhine-Main area, it is unlikely that it will be realized.
The Gambacher Kreuz has no connecting lanes from the A45 from Dortmund to the A5 towards Kassel and vice versa. Due to the weak traffic figures for this traffic relationship, these were not created during construction. Therefore this relation is only made possible by avoiding the junction and using the Giessener Ring . However , there are several service ramps for road maintenance by the motorway maintenance authority, which are not adequately developed.
Alternatively, coming from Dortmund, you can continue to the Munzenberg exit (36), change to the opposite lane of the A 45 and from there to the A 5 in the direction of Kassel.
The state road 3132 runs through the junction and runs parallel to the semi-direct connection in the direction of Dortmund within the cross.
Traffic volume
The cross is used by around 128,000 vehicles every day.
