The Autobahn triangle (short: Dreieck Weil am Rhein , abbreviation: AD Weil am Rhein ) is a freeway triangle in Baden-Württemberg , which is located near Lörrach . It connects the federal highway 5 ( Hattenbacher Dreieck - Frankfurt am Main - Basel ) with the federal highway 98 .

geography

The triangle lies in the area of Weil am Rhein . It is not far from the German-French border river Rhine . The surrounding towns and communities are Eimeldingen on the German side of the Rhine and Village-Neuf on the French side . The triangle is located about 50 km southwest of Freiburg, about 25 km southeast of Mulhouse and about 10 km north of Basel .

On the A 5, the Weil am Rhein motorway triangle has junction number 68 and on the A 98 it is number 1.

history

Until 1963, Märkt near Weil am Rhein was the southernmost point of the A 5. The necessary alignment for the motorway triangle was completed in the early 1960s.

The last section to the Swiss border was not opened until June 14, 1980. In the course of the construction of the A 98 in the early 1980s, the motorway triangle was not completed until 1981. Two years later, the section to Lörrach was passable.

State of development

In this area, the A 5, like the A 98, has two lanes. Except for the Freiburg- Autobahn triangle Hochrhein (two lanes, as it marks the actual start of the A 98), all crossings are single lanes.

The triangle is designed as a right-handed trumpet.

The motorway triangle is particularly busy in the north-south direction. Due to the increased freight traffic on the road, the trucks jam in front of the border almost every day in the section between the triangle and Swiss customs.
