geography

The municipality of Village-Neuf is located to the right of the Canal de Huningue and to the left of the Rhine around 9 km north of the Swiss city of Basel . It borders in the north on Rosenau , in the east on the Rhine, in the south on Hüningen and in the west on Saint-Louis (district Neuweg) .

history

Church Saint-Nicolas in Village-Neuf

The fishing village of Groß-Hüningen had to give way to the fortress of Hüningen and the residents were relocated to Bourg Neuf d'Aoust (since 1704 Village-Neuf ( le village neuf de Grand-Huningue )) founded by royal decree a few kilometers down the Rhine on the Rhine island of Aoust in 1684 . In 1687 the old village was completely demolished. Due to the border location and the proximity to the fortress, the village suffered from the many Franco-German wars. Serious damage occurred in particular during the siege of the fortress in the winter of 1813/1814. The proximity to the Rhine brought with it flood risks - a flood dam was only built in 1838. In 1855 150 people died of cholera .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a silver owl on a red background and was taken over from the old village of Groß-Hüningen. The old village of Groß-Hüningen was given by Bernhard von Weimar to his banker Henri Herwart from Lyon. Like many villages, Groß-Hüningen took over the coat of arms of its landlord in a modified form. The coat of arms of the Herwart family showed a red owl on a white background.

Twin cities

Numerous mutual school visits and club activities are the sign of this lively partnership. Remembrance days such as the day of national mourning are also celebrated together.
