Chalampé was 1709 by demobilized soldiers of the War of Succession and a few families from the entourage founded the Army. The place name appears for the first time in 1717 as Chalambé in documents of the French administration. It is believed that the place name comes from the Alemannic word "Schlamper", which was used to describe the French soldiers who settled there.

There has been a crossing over the Rhine here since 1727. The community has had its French name since 1735.

Before the Rhine was straightened by Johann Gottfried Tulla in the first half of the 19th century, the Rhine was a major problem for the community, as the uneven amount of water and the slight gradient constantly changed the course of the river. This changed the border with Germany, since the course of the river was considered a natural border. Therefore the place belonged to Baden at times.

The Neuchâtel-Chalampé railway bridge had existed since 1878, connecting what was then German Alsace with southern Germany.

During the Second World War, the bridge and the village were destroyed, rebuilt in 1940/41 and partially destroyed again in 1945 when Alsace withdrew from the bridgehead .

Until the construction of the Rhine canal, the population lived mainly from agriculture, fishing and basketry. With the construction of the canal, the community lost a large part of its area, but received numerous jobs for its residents through the industry that settled here. In an industrial park that stretches along the Rhine canal over the boundaries of Chalampé and Bantzenheim to Ottmarsheim , a large chemical plant of the French Rhône-Poulenc (now Rhodia SA ) was built alongside other companies .
