Kingersheim (Alsatian Kingerscha ) is a French town with 13,055 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

Kingersheim is located on the northern outskirts of Mulhouse (French Mulhouse ) and is a member of Mulhouse Alsace Agglomération .

history

Kingersheim is first mentioned in writing in 1195 under the name Kekingsem. But there are traces that point to an existence in the Neolithic as well as in Roman and Merovingian times. The village goes back to the Germanic era and owes its origin - according to a legend - to a hunting lodge that was probably in the old center.

The village suffered in the Thirty Years War . To protect themselves from the attackers, the residents fled to Mühlhausen, which was allied with the Swiss cantons at the time. The agricultural village became increasingly impoverished, but changed abruptly in 1834 with the establishment of a fabric printing factory, which took off from 1880, especially with printed furniture fabrics, which it exported all over the world.

In 1920 Kingersheim experienced strong population growth for the first time, then again in the 1930s due to potash mining .

During the Second World War Kingersheim was occupied by German troops in June 1940. 230 young people from Kingersheim were forced into the German armed forces. The liberation struggles around Kingersheim took place in the winter of 1944/45. After the final victory of the French troops, 90 soldiers and 47 civilians died. 712 apartments were completely or partially destroyed, as well as a school and the festival hall. At that time, 2,484 people still lived in the totally destroyed village.

Parish partnership

Kingersheim is the partner community of Hirschau near Tübingen . In 1959 the mayors of the communities of Hirschau and Kingersheim got to know each other. They were able to convince their local councils and citizens in 1963 that reconciliation between the French and Germans could best be advanced through partnerships at the local level. This conviction led to the signing of the contract on September 14, 1963 in Kingersheim. Since that time there has been a very lively partnership between the two municipalities at municipal, private and club level. The partnership agreement attaches great importance to the following intentions:

“... today we solemnly undertake to maintain and strengthen the ties between our two churches at all times. To actively promote relations between the citizens in every respect in order to achieve - thanks to these peaceful connections - the realization of the democratic ideal. We hope that this beautiful project, which alone can open the door to a time of peace and prosperity, will be crowned with success. "
